NY Giants confirm why Darnell Mooney didn’t play vs Dolphins amid trade rumors

The rumors surrounding Darnell Mooney are growing as the New York Giants need to settle their wide receiver room for the 2026 season.

Darnell Mooney’s absence from the New York Giants’ preseason game against the Miami Dolphins immediately raised eyebrows. With the Giants dealing with a crowded wide receiver room and several veterans potentially viewed as trade assets, Mooney’s decision not to play quickly fueled speculation that a roster move could be coming.

The timing made the rumors particularly interesting. Mooney is one of several experienced receivers competing for opportunities in a group that also includes Malik Nabers, Malachi Fields, Odell Beckham Jr., Braxton Berrios and Darius Slayton.

However, head coach John Harbaugh provided an explanation after the game that appears to put the trade speculation to rest. Speaking to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, Harbaugh revealed that Mooney had been given permission to miss the game for a personal commitment.

Why didn’t Darnell Mooney play against the Dolphins?

John Harbaugh explained that Darnell Mooney had told him months ago that he would be the best man at his brother’s wedding. Because of that commitment, the Giants coach gave the veteran receiver permission to miss the preseason game in Miami.

Mooney’s absence therefore had nothing to do with a trade or his standing on the Giants’ roster, according to Harbaugh. The explanation is significant because his decision not to suit up came at a time when New York’s wide receiver competition was already generating plenty of speculation.

Harbaugh told Schwartz that Mooney “told Harbaugh a few months ago that he was the best man at his brother’s wedding. Harbaugh gave him permission to miss this game.”

That clarification makes Mooney’s situation very similar to Braxton Berrios’. Berrios also missed the Dolphins game and initially generated trade speculation before Harbaugh explained that he was dealing with a minor soft-tissue issue.

Could the Giants still make moves at wide receiver?

Even though Darnell Mooney appears to be safe for now, the Giants still face difficult decisions at wide receiver. The room is crowded, and the coaching staff will eventually have to determine which players fit best into the final roster.

Malik Nabers, Malachi Fields and Odell Beckham Jr. appear to have strong positions within the group, while veterans such as Mooney, Berrios and Darius Slayton could potentially attract interest from other teams.

That does not mean the Giants are actively shopping any of those players. However, with the roster deadline approaching, New York could receive calls from teams looking for experienced wide receiver help.
