There’s no denying that Lionel Messi is one of the greatest, most impactful soccer players of all time. That’s why it’s kind of saddening to see that his tenure at Barcelona will come to an end like this, all of a sudden.

The Argentine superstar and Barcelona had already made amends and Josep Maria Bartomeu’s departure made us all think that their impasse was water under the bridge. He had even agreed on terms on a new contract.

Fast-forward to today and the team announced in a statement that he won’t be able to sign that deal due to La Liga’s regulations. Now, he’ll walk away for free and will have to choose a new destination.

This Is Why Messi Should Join PSG

Let’s be honest for a second here. It’s not like Messi has a million options. I mean, he’ll have millions of offers for sure, but most of them from teams that can’t offer him an opportunity to compete at the highest level or – more importantly – the kind of money he’s used to getting.

That’s where Paris Saint-Germain can swoop in and ‘save him’. It’s not a secret that the French giants have plenty of cash to spare and they’ve been wanting to get ahead of Messi’s sweepstakes for quite some time.

Not only PSG will make sense for Messi from a financial – and even geographical – standpoint but also from an athletic point of view. He’d be playing under an Argentine coach in Mauricio Pochettino on a lesser tournament if compared to La Liga, which would help him preserve his body.

PSG have enough depth on its ranks to make up for Messi’s absence every now and then if he wants – or needs – to get a breather. While he’s as good as ever, God knows he’s not getting any younger.

Moreover, Messi joining PSG will get him a chance to reunite with a close friend in Neymar, whom he dominated with at Barcelona. Add Kylian Mbappé to the mix and you’d have perhaps the greatest offensive trio of all time right there.

Sergio Ramos recently joined the French side to have a shot at winning another UEFA Champions League, and while he’s been used to being on the opposite side to Messi, Lionel would be delighted to join forces with one of the best center-backs to ever do it.

Adding Messi to an already deep and talented squad managed by one of the best in the business would make PSG instant contenders. And leading them to the UEFA Champions League trophy after years of struggles would further cement his legacy as the GOAT. So, what’s not to like? Get it done, Lio.
