Why did Jordan Romano call the Phillies vs Marlins game the worst outing of his career?

It was Jordan Romano himself who recognized just how poorly things went and admitted it as clearly as possible. But behind that rough outing are stats that back up just how much he's struggled this season.

Jordan Romano had another rough outing for the Philadelphia Phillies during Game 2 of their home series against the Miami Marlins, once again putting the game in jeopardy after giving up several runs. But what surprised many was Romano himself admitting that this was the worst outing of his entire career.

The numbers don’t lie—this game against the Marlins was statistically the worst of Romano’s MLB career. ā€œProbably the worst outing of my careerā€ he said, but It wasn’t the first time he’s posted a 15+ ERA in a single game with the Phillies—he also gave up 3 runs in a rough outing against the Dodgers.

However, Game 2 against the Marlins stands out as his worst: it was the first time Romano allowed 6 runs, 6 hits, and 2 home runs in a single appearance. It was a disaster—one that hadn’t happened to him before. Since 2019, he had never allowed more than 3 runs in a game.

Romano’s Struggles in Philadelphia

Interestingly, Romano’s worst outings have all come during his short time with the Phillies. Despite feeling physically strong on the mound—saying to On Pattison, ā€œThat’s the best my arm has felt in a long timeā€ā€”he admitted that Marlins hitters seemed to be locked in: ā€œThey were seeing it really well today.ā€

The Marlins meltdown marked just the third time in his career that he’s allowed two home runs in a single outing. The last time it happened was back in 2022 when he gave up two in games against the Red Sox and Guardians while still with the Blue Jays. Even more concerning: this is the first time in his seven-year MLB career that his ERA has climbed into double digits, currently sitting above 10.

Phillies Find a Way to Win Despite Romano’s Woes

Despite his struggles, Romano has managed to hold an 8-1 record—thanks in large part to the efforts of other relievers, the starting rotation, and a strong defense. His record doesn’t look bad on paper, but it’s clear he needs to make some adjustments to fit into a Phillies bullpen that hasn’t been nearly as strong as the rotation.
