The future of Mike Tomlin could be uncertain with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite renewed hope with the arrival of Aaron Rodgers, a report by Tom Pelissero indicates that it’s unclear how much longer the head coach will remain with the organization.
“They are in win-now mode as they are every year with Mike Tomlin who, himself, is at least somewhat on a year-to-year basis as he enters his 19th season as the Steelers’ head coach.”
Tomlin had a lot of success early in his career with the Steelers, winning a Super Bowl and consistently contending in the AFC. However, the franchise has now gone nine years without a playoff win.
Will Mike Tomlin be fired?
No. Mike Tomlin will not be fired by the Steelers because he is under contract through the 2027 season. Even so, Pelissero warns that it’s uncommon in the NFL for a head coach to remain in his position for nearly two decades.
“My belief is that Mike Tomlin will be the head coach of the Steelers for as long as he wants to be, but, he’s entering his 19th year. There is not a lot of precedent in the modern NFL, Bill Belichick aside, for somebody going on 20 years with one team. It just doesn’t happen. There’s a variety of reasons for that. Mike Tomlin, we all know, has never had a losing season in Pittsburgh. He has a lot of influence over all aspects of the organization. Personnel, look no further that Aaron Rodgers.”

Is Mike Tomlin retiring?
Mike Tomlin is not considering retirement, but for various reasons, Pelissero mentions that this could change in the future. The constant yearly rumors and a possible lack of results could lead to an unexpected decision.
“Every year we have a story of some team reaching out on Mike Tomlin and could you end up trading for him. Every year, there’s some level of rumblings about could Mike Tomlin decide to do something else. Could he go into broadcasting? There’s a lot of different things that he can choose to do. I’m not saying he’s sitting there right now thinking about, I’m going to walk away after the season. I would just say anytime that you get into these types of situations and every year we’re talking about what someone’s future is going to be. That should give a pretty clear indication that you’re on a year-to-year basis.”
