George Pickens spoke for the first time as a new member of the Dallas Cowboys. During the conference call, he was asked about the Pittsburgh Steelers and Mike Tomlinâs decision to let him go. The wide receiver confirmed he didnât request a trade.
âThis game is just as much of a business as it is football. It was kind of out of my control. Iâm just glad to be here in Dallas and continue the winning culture that they have. Iâm where I am at right now. I canât look into the past.â
Now, Jerry Jones sees Pickens as a key piece for the Cowboys to win the Super Bowl for the first time in nearly three decades, in a very explosive offense alongside Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.
Why did Steelers trade George Pickens?
The main reason the Steelers traded George Pickens is because he was entering the final year of his contract and they had no intention of giving him an extension that would pay him at least $30 million per season.
Given this scenario, Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan looked to get something in return before letting the star wide receiver walk away as a free agent in 2026. However, many were expecting that duo alongside DK Metcalf with Aaron Rodgers, probably, as quarterback.

Obviously, another argument is Pickensâ difficult character and explosive personality. Those factors caused him many problems in Pittsburgh. For that reason, several reports indicate that disciplinary issues were also a key factor in the decision to send him to Dallas.
