After the game, it was Cooper Flagg’s mother who took centerstage due to a celebration caught on camera and a very harsh message about the home fans at Dean E. Smith Center. 



Duke is now the number one ranked program in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball">college basketball</a>, following their statement victory against the Tar Heels and Auburn’s loss to Alabama. Ahead of the games that really matter, as the Blue Devils gear up for the ACC tournamen and March Madness, Flagg was in the eye of the storm for his mother’s behavior during The Tobacco Road rivalry game.



Flagg put on a clinic during the second half of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/duke">Duke</a>‘s matchup at North Carolina, the star forward caught fire and was unstoppable, as well as unsurpassable for the Tar Heels. Flagg delivered the final nail in the coffin to UNC with a powerful dunk, to cap off the win. Flagg’s parents were caught by the TV broadcast, gesturing the “On your head” celebration in the stands, which sparked controversy throughout social media.



However, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg">Flagg</a>‘s mother, Kelly, doubled down on his celebration, dropping a bold statement for all fans and students in Chapel Hill to listen to.

“I want to apologize to anyone who was offended by my language that was caught in a celebratory moment. I do realize that it wasn’t my best look,” Kelly Flagg stated on his Facebook profile. “It was a very intense situation we were put into and we were taken aback by the crudeness of the UNC fans as we made our way into the arena.

The celebration was a moment of being so proud of our kid and also a big F-you to the entire Carolina fan base for being classless a——-. If you are UNC fan and didn’t like it…tough s—! Better luck next time! Go Duke.”



<h2>Flagg taunts UNC’s gameplan</h2>



Duke wasn’t enjoying their visit to <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/north-carolina">UNC</a> during the first half of the game as both schools exchanged blows in an exhausting matchup. Flagg committed three fouls in the first half, and his playing time was limited to nine minutes. As he returned to the court during the final frame, most fans expected the Tar Heels to target Flagg as he was in foul trouble.



However, Flagg roamed free on defense and was able to disrupt the Tar Heels’ offensive drives. Even the freshman star was taken aback by Carolina’s decision, as he admitted after the game with a slight dig at Hubert Davis and UNC.



“A little bit [surprised they didn’t target me]. That would’ve been smart for sure,” Cooper Flagg said postgame, per Sporting News.

After the loss to Duke, North Carolina finished as the #5 seed in the ACC, and will wait in the tournament’s second round for the winner of #12 Notre Dame and #13 Pittsburgh’s first round duel.

Still, it wasn’t enough, as Duke eventually overwhelmed UNC and pulled away late to secure the win

Jackson played 19 minutes in the loss to Duke, recording 8 points, an assist, and a steal. Fellow freshman in Duke, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg">Flagg</a>, posted 15 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists during his 29-minutes performance.



<h2>Found a way to win</h2>



Despite losing the turnover battle, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/duke">Duke</a> managed to hold off many of the off turnovers chances for the Tar Heels, while North Carolina didn’t have much success when trying to contain the visitors in transition.



The Blue Devils dominated the paint, proving crucial for their rivalry victory in Chapel Hill. Duke finished the night with a 12-point edge in points in the paint, and as they defeated UNC by 13, that area of the court proved decisive.

<h2>Cooper Flagg could save the Mavericks</h2>



Flagg isn’t like the average<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> NBA </a>prospect. He plays hard on both ends of the floor, and the Mavs’ front office has prioritized defense, so he clearly fits their vision:



“Cooper Flagg is the exact kind of generational talent that Dallas needs. A dominant defensive force with the potential to be an elite two-way player, Flagg would fit perfectly into general manager Nico Harrison’s vision for the team,“ he wrote.

Associate head coach Jai Lucas is set to become the next head coach for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/miami-hurricanes">Miami Hurricanes</a>, as reported by On3. However, Lucas will remain with Scheyer and Flagg in Durham until the season concludes, before heading to South Florida to take over the program in Coral Gables.

While the season is far from over for the Blue Devils, with everything they’ve worked for within reach, Jai Lucas couldn’t hide his emotion after earning the head coach title at such a prestigious university.



“I am incredibly grateful and honored to be the next head coach at the University of Miami,” Lucas stated. “Miami has everything you need to compete at the highest level — elite academics, a passionate fan base, and a commitment to excellence in athletics. Fast forward to today, and that hasn’t changed.



In his first — and most likely lone — season with the Duke Blue Devils, the young star has left averages of 19.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.2 blocks on 49.7% from the floor and 38.2% from three-point range. 



Needless to say, any coach would be fortunate to have such an elite recruit. Nevertheless, as good a player as he is, Jon Scheyer believes his personality and maturity will lead him to stardom.

“Yeah, I think the, the talent speaks for itself. Love coaching his talent,” said Scheyer. “But, I’ve loved coaching the person. You know, he’s, he’s all about the right stuff.”

Scheyer was thankful for the opportunity to lead such a unique player. He raved about his ability to do a little bit of everything on the court, as well as his competitive fire:



“He plays so hard, he’s competitive, great teammate and, obviously, his ability is special. So, as a coach, it allows you to do a lot of different things because of his versatility. You know, he’s guarding one through five. You know, there’s not really a matchup for him. If you double him, he passes it. If it’s one-on-one, he scores it. He just has that feel for, when the game’s on the line or the game rises, he’s going to do that himself,” he continued.

Despite the lopsided showdown between the ACC rivals, head coach Jon Scheyer sent Cooper Flagg and the rest of the players a strong message, ordering them not to rest on their laurels, as the real season is only just beginning. With March Madness approaching, the Blue Devils will only be content with one result during the NCAA tournament.



Duke holds a narrow lead over its closest pursuers, Clemson and Louisville. Both schools are 1.5 games behind the Blue Devils, as they have played two games left in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> season, while Duke has just one matchup remaining.



Regardless, Scheyer, Flagg and Duke still control their own destiny. A win during <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball">college basketball’s</a> Rivalry Week against their archnemesis just south in Chapel Hill, the North Carolina Tar Heels, could be crucial for Duke’s morale heading into the most challenging time of the year: March Madness. “It’s the best time of the year. It’s what you work the entire off season for,” Scheyer stated, via On3. “I think the thing about March too that I’ve learned is, you know, records don’t matter anymore. You’re not entitled to anything. Every game you play, somebody’s season has a potential to end. So, you’re playing and competing against teams that are very hungry.”

After an emotional Senior Night in Durham, it was freshman Flagg who stole the spotlight as fans chanted for him to stay another year at Duke. A return for his sophomore campaign seems improbable, and Scheyer made a sincere statement about the 18-year-old phenom that felt more like a farewell message.

With that in mind, NBA analyst Bill Simmons shared his thoughts on any potential destination for him. When thinking about a potential duo with Victor Wembanyama, he claimed that it would be ‘the dream.’

With Wembanyama’s season-ending injury, there’s a small, albeit existent, chance that he will end up teaming up with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg">Flagg</a> if the Spurs manage to win the NBA Draft lottery.



<h2>Bill Simmons wants Cooper Flagg to land on a good team</h2>



“Well, I don’t want him to go to a bad team where we had this NBA infection that we’ve had for 50, 60 years where we take these great, talented players and just stick them in bad situations. Like what happened with LeBron in Cleveland the first couple years. He was on the worst possible team. And he turned out great for him, but you just lose a couple years,” Simmons said. “The best case scenario is what happened with (Larry) Bird.”

“I don’t know what the future holds,” Cooper Flagg stated postgame, per AP. “I mean, I’m living in the present right now, living in the moment, taking it day by day.”

“The feeling I had — the crowd, it was the loudest it’s been all year,” Flagg said, via ESPN. “I was back on defense, and I could almost feel that building shaking. This is the best place in college basketball, for sure. I’ve loved every single minute of being here. It’s been an amazing year.”

He’s been the most talked about player in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a> for a year, and for very good reasons.



Flagg plays hard on both ends of the floor. He creates for others, scores from all three level, and has already held his own against <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> competition in a scrimmage vs. Team USA.



Add his youth, efficiency, and work ethic to the mix, and that’s why former NBA GM John Hollinger believes no one else has a shot at even sniffing the top pick in this year’s draft.



<h2>No one can take down Cooper Flagg’s top spot</h2>



“Can anyone push Cooper Flagg for No. 1? No,” Hollinger wrote. “OK, but what if … No. Seriously, just … no. Given his late-December birthday, Flagg is likely to be the youngest player in the 2025 draft and yet is almost certainly the best draft-eligible player right now. Among power-conference players, he has the best PER of any non-center and the best BPM of any player except Auburn’s Johni Broome, who is nearly half a decade older.”

<h2>Flagg is as close to perfect as it is as a prospect</h2>



Of course, no player is perfect, and Flagg isn’t the exception to the rule. Even so, Hollinger doesn’t think there’s anything about his game that should scare off any team:



“A real nitpicker would say Flagg’s rates of rebounds and blocks are unexceptional. Not bad, just not remarkable in the way the rest of his line is. Some concerns remain about the quality of his deep shooting and the extent of his prowess as an on-ball shot-creator. But, c’mon … Flagg is by far the top prospect in this draft,” added Hollinger.

Of course, there are no guarantees when it comes to the NBA Draft, and we’ve seen projected stars fail over and over. But barring a shocking turn of events, Flagg should be a perennial All-Star.

The Maine native is a guard trapped in a big man’s body. His ability to pull up over every defender on the court translates to the pros, and he’s also a very good defensive player.



That’s why even the opposition has no choice but to tip their hats to him. That happened again when UCLA coach Mick Cronin used one big word to describe him: Generational.

Everybody raves about offense in today’s game, and rightfully so. Unfortunately, that makes plenty of players do not take pride in playing defense anymore, but that’s not the case with Flagg.

So far, he’s averaged 19.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.5 steals, 1.1 blocks, and 1.4 three-pointers per game on 49/37/82 shooting splits. He’s the most well-rounded prospect in the nation.

Jon Scheyer’s team just thrashed the Miami Hurricanes with a 97-60 win. That loss dropped Miami to 2-15 in ACC play, and it added even more drama to an underwhelming season.



Moreover, this game may have given Miami a glimpse of their new coach. Jai Lucas, one of Duke’s top assistants, is reportedly the leading candidate to take the reins of the program next season. If that’s the case, coach Scheyer wishes him the best.

“Jai is a special coach,” Scheyer said. “We’ve been through a lot together for three years. He’s everything you could want. He’s a great coach, bottom line. Our friendship will always be there no matter what.”

Lucas has been a part of Duke’s coaching staff for three years now after a two-year tenure with John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats. He also has experience as a Director of Basketball Operations.

That kind of background, plus the Hurricanes’ struggles, make him a very suitable candidate for the head coaching position. The transfer portal will open a month from now, and Miami will most likely hire a new coach before that happens, even though Lucas might still be at work since Duke could get pretty far in the tournament.

In recent games, Isaiah Evans has gotten an expanded role. He’s paid that confidence back with back-to-back 17-point games and shooting 45% from beyond the arc.



Evans is projected to be a second-round pick in the 2025 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> Draft, but if you were to ask coach Jon Scheyer, he should be taken much higher because of his work ethic.

He then raved about his work ethic and how stronger he’s gotten throughout the course of the year. Per Scheyer, this breakout is a product of the effort he’s put in the weight room:



“He’s gotten stronger with the work that he’s done in the weight room. His ability to move his feet, his rebounding, his positioning, he’s a two-way, big-time wing. When he’s in there, I have full confidence in what he’s doing,” he added.

As reported by Ishaan Bhattacharya of Fadeaway World and Wemby Central on X, it seems like Flagg would be more than glad to team up with a fellow first-overall pick: Victor Wembanyama.

Of course, he won’t have any say in this. The San Antonio Spurs would have to win the NBA Draft Lottery or trade up to No. 1 or maybe No. 2 to have a chance to get him.

Flagg knows he’s the leader and the best player on the team. He also knows all eyes are on him as the projected first-overall pick in the 2025 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> Draft. However, that’s not why he’s there.

He’s led by example in his first — and most likely only — season at Durham. In an era when players only care about their brands and social media, it’s refreshing to see someone actually respecting the game.
