However, he does have a history with the Boston Celtics, and fans cannot wait to see how he’ll react at the TD Garden.



With that in mind, the former NBA champion looked back on the back-and-forths he’s had with Celtics fans. And while they have a reputation for being, harsh, sort of speak, he acknowledged that he wasn’t at his best either.

“I will say last time in Boston, I don’t think that was the best — not this regular season, but when we played in the playoffs and everyone saw me flip off the birds and kind of lose my sh*t a little bit — that wasn’t a great reflection of who I am and how I like to compete on a high level,” Irving said. “It wasn’t a great reflection on my end towards the next generation on what it means to control your emotions in that type of environment, no matter what people are yelling at you.”

Even though he’s clearly not liked there, Irving believes Celtics fans still appreciate good basketball, so he’s looking forward to putting on a show and being at his best there:



“I’m built for these moments, to be able to handle circumstances like that, and I’ve been able to grow since then. So of course it’s going to be a hectic environment, but I’m looking forward to it and I see it as a healthy relationship that I have with the fans. I almost think about ‘Gladiator,’ just winning the crowd over. It is good to hear the TD Garden silent when you’re playing well. They still respect great basketball,” he said.



<h2>It’s Just Basketball, Says Kyrie</h2>



Even so, Kyrie isn’t all that worried about playing in that hostile environment anymore. He believes this is just competition, and there are more important things in life:



“I think I’m better at consolidating kind of the emotions now or being aware of what it’s going to be like,” Irving said. “We call it animosity, we call it hate, we call it, ‘It’s going to be hell in Boston.’ I mean, there are real, live circumstances going on in the world that are bigger than the basketball, kind of the competitive side of things and answering those questions.”

That was the main takeaway following their five-point loss.



Doncic took the blame for the defeat, claiming that he didn’t come out to play with the energy his team needed. Nonetheless, his veteran co-star didn’t seem to agree with that assessment.

“I mean, he’s not alone in this,” Irving said. “I expect him to say something like that, especially knowing how much he cares and how much he wants to win. How much he wants to lead our group. So I expect nothing less. I think you heard me too, just say that it’s on me. That’s what you’re supposed to hear from the leaders of your team. We know that we didn’t play with the best energy; we didn’t create enough opportunities for us to get easy baskets. Just gotta take the hit on the chin, man. It’s not the first time we’ve been hit. Just competitive sports. It’s what makes it great.”

Irving also had a bit of a Mea Culpa for not pushing the pace and being more aggressive in the paint, adding that they needed to have a greater sense of urgency when they were down on the scoreboard: 



“I think tonight some of those shots that KAT was hitting took the wind out of our sails,” Irving continued. “Anthony [Edwards] got down, got a few easy layups, few pull-ups. And then when we went down six, I just feel like we stopped pushing the ball a little bit. That starts with me. I just gotta continue to keep my pace up and get into the lane. Finish my shots that I have on Rudy (Gobert).”



<h2>The Mavs Were ‘Emotionally Fatigued’</h2>



Kyrie then explained that he felt like the team as a whole was a little worn out mentally and emotionally and claimed that they needed to brace themselves for Game 5 in a hostile environment:



“Those are things that I’m going to correct moving forward. But I just gotta stay aggressive. We just have to consistently do the little things,” added Irving. “Coming out tonight ,we felt like we were okay. You can tell it was an emotional fatigue. Everybody was pressured. Now we just gotta deal with this one, deal with this loss and get ready for Minnesota and enjoy that ride there man, because it’s going to be hostile.”

They’ve been a perfect complement to each other thus far, dominating and taking the reins of the offense night in and night out. They might be the only team in the league with two closers on the floor.



That’s why, after watching Irving taking over in the fourth quarter to lead the Mavs to a Game 3 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, Doncic had to give him his flowers.

“Unbelievable. That’s why they call him, some people, Mr. 4th quarter, right? Just amazing,” Doncic said after the win. “He scored, what, 33? It’s amazing. He’s born for this situation. He (was) born for the clutch situations. So we just give the ball to him.”

<h2>They Still Need To Take Care Of Business</h2>



No team has ever come back from a 0-3 deficit in the NBA playoffs. Even so, Doncic wants to make sure his team isn’t on the wrong side of history, so he’s not ready to celebrate yet: 



“I don’t know what to say, but it feels great. We gotta think about the next game,” Doncic said. “We gotta play with the same mentality. They’re not gonna go away. No way. We need to prepare for the next game and think about the next game. We just say one more; we need one more. (There’s) Nothing done. They have an amazing team, so nothing (is) done yet. We’ve got to get one more, and then if we get one more, we need the rest.”

The Mavericks will most likely face the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, and Irving’s return to the TD Garden should be a major storyline to follow. Still, they need to handle business vs. the Timberwolves first.

The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/minnesota-timberwolves" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Minnesota Timberwolves</a> star has established himself as a legitimate two-way star, and his confidence is second to none.



Edwards plays and talks with a swagger that not many 22-year-olds have in this league. He won’t back down from any challenge, and he loves talking trash to bonafide stars.



That’s why some thought he was calling out <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kyrie-irving" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kyrie Irving</a> ahead of the Western Conference Finals. He looked excited about getting to defend him and didn’t hesitate to say that ‘he had him.’



<h2>Kyrie Used Edwards’ Words As Motivation</h2>



Unfortunately for him, those words backfired rapidly. Irving scored 30 points on 52% shooting, outplaying him on both ends of the floor en route to a big win. Following the game, he admitted that he did use the challenge as a motivation.

“I used it as motivation,” Irving laughingly admitted. “When I was sitting at home and I saw it, I was just like, ‘It’s just a nod of respect’. And then also, I knew what type of game it was going to be for Game 1, and also for the rest of the series.”



Even so, that doesn’t mean he took those words in a bad way at all. If anything, Edwards’ comments made him know that he was going to be in for a long night if he didn’t bring his A-Game:



“So, you’re right; I was at home with my family watching Game 7, and Ant comes out and says, ‘I got Kyrie’. But also, that’s a no-fear mentality, and that’s why we love Ant. So coming out tonight, I knew that he was going to pressure me a little bit,” Irving continued.



<h2>It’s All Love Between Kyrie And Edwards</h2>



Irving had nothing but praise for his fellow No. 1 pick. He praised him for having a competitive drive and a no-fear mentality, adding that they’ve been watching each other play for quite a while now:



“As a peer, man, I love that,” Irving said. “It’s nothing better. When Ant was a little younger, I’m sure he was watching me, and when he was in high school, I was watching him. That no-fear mentality that he has is why I love him.”



Edwards wasn’t disrespectful or claimed that he was going to lock Kyrie up; he just said he was going to guard him. Now, he’s going to have to take his defensive game up a notch if he wants to continue having that matchup.

Of course, this isn’t anything new. There have been multiple reports about LeBron’s desire to be reunited with both of them, yet it hasn’t been possible thus far:



“Well, in 2019, LeBron James really wanted Ty Lue to be the head coach,” Charania said. “The Lakers had negotiations with him and did not hire him. So that’s one thing that he wanted did not happen. The last couple years, Kyrie Irving, they made two attempted runs at Kyrie Irving. LeBron James wanted Kyrie Irving as his point guard. That did not happen.”

“Now, who’s available? The one name I continually hear is Trae Young,” Buha said. “He’s been to Laker playoff games before. He’s a Klutch Sports client. That’s probably the most realistic one right now. What happens with Dallas and Kyrie? Do they flame out? Do they lose in the Play-In? Do they lose in round one? Does Dallas ultimately break that up? And then, what’s the market for Kyrie?”



As for Donovan Mitchell, who was also mentioned as a potential target for Rob Pelinka, might not be available, as the Cleveland Cavaliers will make a strong push to keep him, and both the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets will also be in the mix:



“Donovan Mitchell, it seems like there’s been a little bit more growing optimism and buzz that he’s gonna stay in Cleveland. But even if he leaves, the two New York teams have reportedly been the favorites just because he’s from the greater New York area,” said Buha.

Likewise, he’s gotten into a lot of trouble since he left the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cleveland-cavaliers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cleveland Cavaliers</a>, so he’s a bit of a controversial figure in the league.



Irving has often said things without saying them, and it seems like he enjoys throwing darts at other teams, players, organizations, and whatnot. That’s why he’s constantly making the news.



Notably, that might be the case again this time after his first media availability of the season, as he may have taken a slight shot at the Cavaliers while trying to praise the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/dallas-mavericks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dallas Mavericks</a> organization.

Dallas’ decision to re-sign Irving this offseason was as much about retaining an asset as it was keeping the high-scoring guard around.



After losing Jalen Brunson for nothing the previous summer, the Mavs couldn’t afford to let go of another impact guard. But keeping Irving won’t necessarily cure what ails this team, which went just 9-18 after he debuted.



Dallas struggled with depth this past season, and while it added a few rotation players over the offseason, it might not still have enough to ascend in the West.



This deal could give Luka Dončić a capable co-star in Herro (a 20-point scorer each of the past two seasons), plus a three-and-D wing in Martin. Jović is a wild card, but he’s a 6’10” combo forward who can score and create.



Because of Irving’s availability issues, few teams might view him as a positive asset at this point, but Miami could see him as a suitable alternative if its Damian Lillard pursuit doesn’t pan out.”

“Dallas is going to be a good team this year,” Scott added. “I don’t think they’re going to be a force in the West, it’s just too many great teams. But Kyrie Irving is one of the most talented players I’ve ever seen.”

Of course, that’s what most analysts seem to think about this team, but we’ve seen what talented duos are capable of when they’re at their best, so it’ll be interesting to see how they respond.
