Following a decent performance as a rookie, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mac-jones">Mac Jones</a> regressed in his second year in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a>. But things are going even worse in 2023, as his future as the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-england-patriots">New England Patriots</a>‘ starting quarterback looks in jeopardy.



The team’s offense has been unproductive this season, having failed to score more than 30 points and recording 20 or more just twice. Many are pointing their fingers at the quarterback, who is 28th in the league in QBR (36.5). Offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien, however, has shown strong support for Jones. In fact, he claimed that if there’s someone to blame, that’s him.



“What I see is that he’s a very bright guy, he works very hard, he’s passionate about the game. Things haven’t gone great for him this year. I don’t think he’s the No. 1 guy to blame. If you want to blame anybody, blame me. I’m the one that designs it and it’s not going very well,” O’Brien said, via NESN.



After a terrible experiment with Matt Patricia leading the unit in 2022, the Patriots brought O’Brien back this offseason, but he hasn’t brought any solution to their offensive woes. The team averages an eighth-worst 293.5 yards per game, while its 13.5 points per game are the second worst in the NFL. Therefore, it’s safe to say the problem is bigger than the quarterback.

“Look, at the end of the day can he execute better? Are there things that he can do better? Sure. But there’s things that all of us have to do better to put a winning product on the field, and right now that’s not what it is,” O’Brien added. “What I see is a very confident guy, that’s a very bright guy, a very hard-working guy that’ll continue to work hard and try to improve on the things he needs to improve on.”

<h2>Mac Jones’ future as Patriots QB1 looks up in the air</h2>



On Sunday, Jones was <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/mac-jones-understands-why-bill-belichick-benched-him-vs-giants-20231127-BUS-88148.html">benched for Bailey Zappe</a> at halftime of the Patriots’ 7-10 loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. That was the fourth time he was pulled this year.



But since Zappe never seized his time on the field either, Jones has so far started every game for the Patriots this season. The question is for how long Bill Belichick will go on like this if Jones doesn’t turn up his level.

“I mean, I’m good right now. I really want to be the quarterback here. I’ve always wanted to be a quarterback in the NFL, and specifically for the Patriots,” said on the ‘Jones and Mego’ show of WEEI on Monday, via NESN. “Like I said, I’ve got a lot of room to grow and everything, and I’m going to just continue to work hard and do all the things I can to put myself in a position to have success.”



For the fourth time this season, Jones was benched for Bailey Zappe at halftime of the Patriots’ 7-10 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday. His performances have left much to be desired so far, but Jones still believes he can turn things around.

<h2>Mac Jones explains how hard it is to play quarterback</h2>



Jones made quite an impression in 2021, shortly after being selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. The Patriots came from a disappointing campaign in their first year without Tom Brady, so the way Jones settled in the NFL gave them reasons to believe.



In his rookie year, Jones threw for 3,801 yards, with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions for a 56.9 QBR. His stats declined in 2022, with 2,997 yards, 14 TDs and 11 INTs for a 38.4 QBR. This year, his numbers are even worse (2,120 yards, 10 TDs, 12 INTs, 36.5 QBR). In the same interview, Jones pointed out how hard it is to be a quarterback in the NFL.



“Playing quarterback in the NFL is the toughest job in sports,” Jones said. “It’s hard to understand if you haven’t been back there. Everyone would say that that’s played. It’s a really difficult position. That’s why it’s the best position. I understand the frustration. At the end of the day, this is my dream to play quarterback. I want to play better.”

Jones has struggled to find ways to put his team in a position to win games. “It’s my job to go out there and play well regardless of the circumstance, so there’s no excuses not to,” Jones said. “I had a few bad throws and just wasn’t on the same page as the offense today, so I gotta do a better job of creating that standard and making sure we communicate.”

This was the fourth time Jones was benched this season. Zappe came on for the first time during the blowout loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4, and once again replaced Jones in another terrible defeat to the New Orleans Saints the following week. In Week 10, before the team’s bye, Belichick also made a quarterback move during the 6-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Germany.

<h2>Bailey Zappe hopes to start against the Chargers</h2>



“Yeah, that’d be great,” Zappe said when asked if he would like to have more starter reps this week. “But that’s Coach Belichick’s decision. Whatever he decides, if he wants to do — whatever. I’ll do whatever he says.”



Despite the quarterback change, the Patriots didn’t show much of an improvement in the second half. They did manage to score a touchdown thanks to running back Rhamondre Stevenson, but Zappe still left much to be desired.

His nine of 14 completions went to targets no longer than five yards, totaling -4 air yards. Zappe managed to put the Patriots in a position to attempt a field goal to force overtime, but he had previously thrown a costly interception that set up the Giants’ field goal. Even so, Belichick refused to say who will start next week.



“That’s Coach Belichick’s decision,” the second-year quarterback insisted when asked if he would like to get the chance to start. “If I start, I’m going to do everything I can like I have the past times I’ve started and try to go out there and win.”



<h2>Patriots clinch losing record</h2>



Regardless of what they do from now on, the Patriots will finish the 2023 NFL season with a losing record. Sitting at 2-9 after 12 weeks, there’s simply no way to avoid it. Therefore, it’s uncertain whether Belichick will make a quarterback change since it seems useless at this point.

Neither Jones nor Zappe have proven to be the answer this year, but at least the former Alabama quarterback did give reasons for optimism in the past. He made an impression in his rookie year, but took some steps back in 2022. Zappe did well in his two starts last season, but it was a very small sample size. In 2023, his time on the field was quite disappointing.



The Patriots will host the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, December 3, with not much at stake other than avoiding a fifth-straight loss that would make their year even more underwhelming.

But Rob Gronkowski believes that’s not the best idea, at least this week.



“It’s a winnable game so start Mac Jones,” Gronkowski said ahead of the Patriots’ game against the New York Giants on the “Up &amp; Adams” show, via NESN. “If it wasn’t a winnable game, start Will Grier.”



The Giants may be one of the few teams the Patriots can see as winnable, since Brian Daboll’s men only have one more win than Bill Belichick’s team this year. Besides, Daniel Jones will be out for months, leaving Tyrod Taylor or Tommy DeVito.



In Gronk’s eyes, the Patriots should stick to Jones to play this game. The Alabama product has been inconsistent this year, throwing for 2,031 yards with 10 touchdowns and as many interceptions for a 40.0 QBR.

Belichick pulled him out more than once for Bailey Zappe, but Gronk believes the latter shouldn’t even be in consideration. “Bailey Zappe, I don’t think he’s in the picture to start. I think he’s had his chances and he’s just not up to par. I think Mac Jones is definitely a better player than Bailey Zappe, gives them the best chance to win the game no matter what the situation is.”

<h2>Gronk makes a case to support Jones over Will Grier</h2>



Since Zappe also failed to make an impression when he saw the field this year, Will Grier emerged as a potential alternative for the Patriots at QB. However, the former tight end still believes Jones should be their guy.



“With this game being a winnable game, I think Mac Jones should start because you know what you’re gonna get out of Mac Jones. If it was a game where they’re playing a very, very good team and there’s really no chance for the Patriots to win, I think then you start Will Grier,” Gronkowski said.

As much as Jones may want to shut the outside noise, it may be hard not to hear all the rumors about his future. But the third-year quarterback made it clear he’s preparing like he will be the starter.

The only question is whether that’s going to happen this season or in the off-season.



Notably, not even Jones knows whether he’s going to be back on the field when the Patriots return from their BYE week. Apparently, Coach Belichick has yet to make — or announce — a decision about it.

<h2>Mac Jones Unsure About Role </h2>



“No. We haven’t talked about that,” Jones said on the Jones and Mego Show, per NBC Sports. “Really, just, today we watched the game film, and kind of talked about the plans for the bye week. We have practice tomorrow. Just see how it goes there and the bye week is a great time to work on things that you can do better so, that’s what I’m going to do.”



Belichick benched Jones after a crucial interception late in the game vs. the Indianapolis Colts. Backup QB Bailey Zappe took over, but he didn’t fare much better, yet he’s still in the mix to start on Week 12:



“Um. I really am not focusing on that and really just focusing on things I can control and focused on that,” Jones said. “I’ve always done that. I really need to improve, obviously, and that’s what I’m going to focus on. I think everyone’s frustrated, and I am, too. There are a lot of things that I wish I could do better. I know I’m going to put the work in to do it.”



<h2>Belichick Is Radio Silent</h2>



Bill Belichick has never been too candid with his answers to the media, and this won’t be the exception to that rule. When asked about whether Jones or Zappe would start vs. the New York Giants, the legendary coach was as tight-lipped and blunt as usual:

The Patriots released Zappe in the offseason and made it clear that they didn’t see him as a legit competition to Jones for the starting job. Now, they could either choose to start him and just give up on the season and Jones or let the former first-round pick audition to get another job at some point in the future.

Before their win over Buffalo, New England had failed to score more than 20 points in each of its first six games. It also suffered blowout losses in the process, conceding 38 points against Dallas and 34 against New Orleans.

Jones had his best performance to date, completing 25 of 30 passes for 272 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 126.7 rating. He showed strong chemistry with Kendrick Bourne, who hauled in six of seven targets for 63 yards and one score.



This much-needed win takes their record to 2-5, and while making the playoffs is still a bit of an uphill battle, the Miami Dolphins’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles kept that door open. Even so, Jones knows the win could be meaningless if they fail to build from that effort:



“[I]t’s just a crumb, right? That’s what I always say. And you’ve got to build off that,” Jones continued. “You’ve got to build off that and attack every day the same. The third-year QB hasn’t had the bounce-back year he vowed to have, and not even reuniting him with OC Bill O’Brien has been enough to get him right on track, but the team’s issues run depeer than that.



There were even some reports about Jones being ‘on a short leash’ vs. the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/las-vegas-raiders" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Las Vegas Raiders</a>, with NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport stating that the Patriots wouldn’t hesitate to pull him if he struggled:

<h2>Mac Jones Is Unbothered By The Outside Noise</h2>



Notably, that didn’t seem to be the case on Sunday. The Patriots trailed 13-3 at halftime and had piled up 107 total yards with four first downs, with Jones struggling and going 8-of-14 for 97 yards and a head-scratching pick in the first two quarters.



Following the loss, he was asked about the rumors of him being on a short leash, and he claimed to be unbothered by all the outside noise and criticism. He’s just there to do his job to the best of his capacities:



“No, just because I don’t really pay attention to that stuff,” Jones said on WEEI on Monday. “Obviously, we talk about it in the interviews and shows. For me, I just want to go out there and try and execute a little bit better each week and get better. Every week’s different. Some weeks you’re going to run the ball a lot or play action a lot, and some week’s you’re going to throw and do all those things.”



The Alabama product talked about his work ethic and how everybody’s trying to push toward the same goal, which is why he cannot afford to be distracted by the reports about his subpar performance.

Two years later, the Patriots decided to draft Mac Jones, a promising quarterback who had a remarkable college career in Alabama. However, he’s not living up to the expectations, and time is running out for him.

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/bill-belichick" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bill Belichick </a>has suffered two of the most lopsided losses of his career in back-to-back weeks, and they’ve scored a grand total of 3 points in the past two games. That’s simply unacceptable.



Needless to say, a lot of that has to fall on <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mac-jones" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mac Jones</a>, but not all of that. Still, it seems like not even the starting quarterback knows what’s wrong with the offense, and that’s a major issue.



<h2>Jones Wants Patriots To Look Forward</h2>



Jones stated that the team needs to address the root cause of their struggles, but they may not have a lot of time to do that, as they’re 1-4 five weeks into the regular season:

“The biggest thing is trying to figure out the root cause to each of the issues,” Jones said on WEEI. “That’s playing better as a team, that’s playing better for me as the quarterback. We just didn’t have the answers to the test yesterday. You just gotta move forward in this league. That’s what it is. You can’t look back; you’ve got to move forward. I’m not happy with anything. Nobody is, and it starts with me as the quarterback.”



Jones has been pulled out and replaced by Bailey Zappe in consecutive weeks, but it doesn’t seem like he’s at risk of losing his job right now, or at least not to his current backup.



<h2>What About The Future?</h2>



The Patriots are facing a lot of questions about the future. Robert Kraft has already made it loud and clear that no one — not even Bill Belichick — will be safe if they don’t make the playoffs this season.



Belichick is still a handful of wins behind Don Shula for the all-time record, but Kraft won’t hesitate to pull the plug and force him to try and break the record somewhere else if they don’t right the ship soon. “Look, I’d like him to break Don Shula’s record,” Kraft said, per ProFootballTalk. “But I’m not looking for any our players to get great stats. We’re about winning.”
