With a 2-8 record, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-england-patriots">New England Patriots</a> are asking a lot of questions to themselves. Unsurprisingly, the team’s poor start to the 2023 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a> season is making them wonder whether to bench <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mac-jones">Mac Jones</a>. But Rob Gronkowski believes that’s not the best idea, at least this week.



“It’s a winnable game so start Mac Jones,” Gronkowski said ahead of the Patriots’ game against the New York Giants on the “Up &amp; Adams” show, via NESN. “If it wasn’t a winnable game, start Will Grier.”



The Giants may be one of the few teams the Patriots can see as winnable, since Brian Daboll’s men only have one more win than Bill Belichick’s team this year. Besides, Daniel Jones will be out for months, leaving Tyrod Taylor or Tommy DeVito.



In Gronk’s eyes, the Patriots should stick to Jones to play this game. The Alabama product has been inconsistent this year, throwing for 2,031 yards with 10 touchdowns and as many interceptions for a 40.0 QBR.

Belichick pulled him out more than once for Bailey Zappe, but Gronk believes the latter shouldn’t even be in consideration. “Bailey Zappe, I don’t think he’s in the picture to start. I think he’s had his chances and he’s just not up to par. I think Mac Jones is definitely a better player than Bailey Zappe, gives them the best chance to win the game no matter what the situation is.”

<h2>Gronk makes a case to support Jones over Will Grier</h2>



Since Zappe also failed to make an impression when he saw the field this year, Will Grier emerged as a potential alternative for the Patriots at QB. However, the former tight end still believes Jones should be their guy.



“With this game being a winnable game, I think Mac Jones should start because you know what you’re gonna get out of Mac Jones. If it was a game where they’re playing a very, very good team and there’s really no chance for the Patriots to win, I think then you start Will Grier,” Gronkowski said.

“He can possibly give you the spark, that little spark to get the offense going to give you a chance to win versus that good team. Mac Jones has played plenty of games versus good teams. But with Will Grier starting versus a team that you can possibly win versus … you really don’t know what you’re going to get out of him. So, you’re not sure if you can get that victory with him starting. But, with Mac Jones starting you definitely have a chance versus the Giants.”

As much as Jones may want to shut the outside noise, it may be hard not to hear all the rumors about his future. But the third-year quarterback made it clear he’s preparing like he will be the starter.

“I hope so. That’s the plan, I think,” Jones said, when asked if he would start on Sunday, via PatriotsWire. “I always work really hard for that, really put a lot of attention in detail in the week, like I talked about. And a lot of the decision-making is things I can’t control, but I can control my attitude and my effort, like I talked about. I’m really thankful, overall, just to be in the NFL and be playing quarterback. And Thanksgiving, right? It’s a great week to be grateful for a lot of things.”



This week, Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe split the reps during the part of practice open to the media. It will be interesting to see if the Patriots trust in their former first-round pick to keep leading the offense or if they shake things up on Sunday.

Normally, rebuilding teams go through these kinds of situations, and it’s expected; there’s actually nothing wrong with that. The real issue here is that the Patriots weren’t supposed to be rebuilding right now. They were supposed to have their QB1 for the future already.



However, with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mac-jones" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mac Jones’</a> regression and his reportedly complicated relationship with HC<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/bill-belichick" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Bill Belichick</a>, it seems like it’s just a matter of time before they move on from the Alabama product. The only question is whether that’s going to happen this season or in the off-season.



Notably, not even Jones knows whether he’s going to be back on the field when the Patriots return from their BYE week. Apparently, Coach Belichick has yet to make — or announce — a decision about it.

<h2>Mac Jones Unsure About Role </h2>



“No. We haven’t talked about that,” Jones said on the Jones and Mego Show, per NBC Sports. “Really, just, today we watched the game film, and kind of talked about the plans for the bye week. We have practice tomorrow. Just see how it goes there and the bye week is a great time to work on things that you can do better so, that’s what I’m going to do.”



Belichick benched Jones after a crucial interception late in the game vs. the Indianapolis Colts. Backup QB Bailey Zappe took over, but he didn’t fare much better, yet he’s still in the mix to start on Week 12:



“Um. I really am not focusing on that and really just focusing on things I can control and focused on that,” Jones said. “I’ve always done that. I really need to improve, obviously, and that’s what I’m going to focus on. I think everyone’s frustrated, and I am, too. There are a lot of things that I wish I could do better. I know I’m going to put the work in to do it.”



<h2>Belichick Is Radio Silent</h2>



Bill Belichick has never been too candid with his answers to the media, and this won’t be the exception to that rule. When asked about whether Jones or Zappe would start vs. the New York Giants, the legendary coach was as tight-lipped and blunt as usual:

“Look, I made the decision [to bench him], that’s what it was,” Belichick bluntly responded. “We’ll deal with next week, next week.”



The Patriots released Zappe in the offseason and made it clear that they didn’t see him as a legit competition to Jones for the starting job. Now, they could either choose to start him and just give up on the season and Jones or let the former first-round pick audition to get another job at some point in the future.

The doubts surrounding the team are still there, but the narrative has been quite different since it beat the Buffalo Bills last week. The Patriots arrived in the divisional game as clear underdogs, yet they managed to hand Josh Allen and company their third loss of the year. In his weekly appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers pointed out how exaggerated the early criticism had been.



“The narrative can change so quickly in this league,” Rodgers said, via PatriotsWire. “It’s overreaction Mondays every single week. It’s overreaction for the entire week. I mean, look at what’s going on in New England. I mean, ‘Mac Jones and Bill’s going to be out. Mac’s the problem.’ And then Mac goes out and balls out.“



Jones and company did much better than predicted in Week 7, with the Alabama product completing 25 of his 30 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns. Rodgers then mentioned how quickly the way Jones is portrayed has changed: “He played incredible and led them on a last-second drive, and now, it’s ‘Mac was never the problem’. You have to be able to laugh at some of this [expletive] because it’s so ridiculous, right? The overreactions and the blanket statements are crazy.”

While the Patriots made a statement by taking down the Bills, they still have plenty of work to do. Their recent win means they’re still alive, warning the rest of the league not to write them off. But they’ll probably have to extend this momentum to really silence their doubters.

The Patriots have already suffered five defeats this year, which is why they have little to no margin for error if they want to save the season. The AFC East is one of the toughest divisions right now, so the Patriots must improve their 2-5 record to have chances to succeed.



Their upcoming clash against division leaders Dolphins doesn’t look easy, but then they’ll have opportunities to prove what they’re capable of. The games against the Commanders, Colts, and Giants could be very telling for their aspirations.

Even though Bill Belichick’s job security has been a talking point this year, it looks like the 71-year-old is not going anywhere anytime soon. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the longtime Patriots head coach secretly agreed to a lucrative, long-term extension with the team during the offseason.

“It’s hard when the results aren’t there. But continue to do that and continue to get better,” Jones told the media. “We left some stuff out there, as always. But at the end of the day, we fought back. And the offensive line, especially, just gave me the time I needed today. And when I have time, I can read the offense how we’re supposed to and, I really appreciate those guys.”



Jones had his best performance to date, completing 25 of 30 passes for 272 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 126.7 rating. He showed strong chemistry with Kendrick Bourne, who hauled in six of seven targets for 63 yards and one score.



This much-needed win takes their record to 2-5, and while making the playoffs is still a bit of an uphill battle, the Miami Dolphins’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles kept that door open. Even so, Jones knows the win could be meaningless if they fail to build from that effort:



“[I]t’s just a crumb, right? That’s what I always say. And you’ve got to build off that,” Jones continued. “You’ve got to build off that and attack every day the same. It’s all about playing for each other, playing for the guy next to you, and understanding why. So we did that today, and we need to continue to do that every day in practice and in the games.”

<h2>It Was A Good Week In Foxboro</h2>



This win caps up a near-perfect win for the Patriots. Bill Belichick got his 300th career win and much more, as he reportedly ‘quietly’ agreed to a very lucrative five-year contract extension with the organization.

There were even some reports about Jones being ‘on a short leash’ vs. the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/las-vegas-raiders" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Las Vegas Raiders</a>, with NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport stating that the Patriots wouldn’t hesitate to pull him if he struggled:



“Sources say Jones is on a short leash, and a poor opening few series could potentially trigger another QB to take snaps in Las Vegas,” reported Rapoport. “It’s just not entirely clear who would take those snaps if Jones is benched.”

Notably, that didn’t seem to be the case on Sunday. The Patriots trailed 13-3 at halftime and had piled up 107 total yards with four first downs, with Jones struggling and going 8-of-14 for 97 yards and a head-scratching pick in the first two quarters.



Following the loss, he was asked about the rumors of him being on a short leash, and he claimed to be unbothered by all the outside noise and criticism. He’s just there to do his job to the best of his capacities:



“No, just because I don’t really pay attention to that stuff,” Jones said on WEEI on Monday. “Obviously, we talk about it in the interviews and shows. For me, I just want to go out there and try and execute a little bit better each week and get better. Every week’s different. Some weeks you’re going to run the ball a lot or play action a lot, and some week’s you’re going to throw and do all those things.”



The Alabama product talked about his work ethic and how everybody’s trying to push toward the same goal, which is why he cannot afford to be distracted by the reports about his subpar performance.

Jones and the Patriots had a chance to win the game, but they fell short 21-17. He finished the game with 200 yards on 24 of 33 passing with one touchdown and one interception.

Jones hasn’t thrown a single touchdown pass in his past three games, all while having five interceptions over that span. He’s coming off his first 200-yard game of the month, and this was also the first time he had a passer rating of 75+in the past three weeks.



But even if Jones were on a short leash, it’s not like Bill Belichick has too many options at his disposal right now. Malik Cunningham was his backup for the Raiders’ game, taking over Bailey Zappe for that spot. Will Grier is also a part of the practice squad, but he doesn’t look like a valid option either.

“The biggest thing is trying to figure out the root cause to each of the issues,” Jones said on WEEI. “That’s playing better as a team, that’s playing better for me as the quarterback. Belichick is still a handful of wins behind Don Shula for the all-time record, but Kraft won’t hesitate to pull the plug and force him to try and break the record somewhere else if they don’t right the ship soon. “Look, I’d like him to break Don Shula’s record,” Kraft said, per ProFootballTalk. “But I’m not looking for any our players to get great stats.
