“I want to be back,” Kerr told Logan Murdock. “I’ve made that clear every time I’ve been asked about it. The only thing I won’t talk about is just any detail of contract stuff, but I’ve been very open. I want to come back. Joe [Lacob has] told me he wants me back, so I think I’ll be back.”



Kerr talked about some of the players he’s had an opportunity to coach since taking the reins of the team in 2015, and he knows he’s become a Bay area legend:



“I coach an unbelievable group of guys,” Kerr said. “I love my coaching staff. I love Mike Dunleavy. Mike has been amazing to work with. Joe’s an incredible owner. When you think about what he’s done with his franchise and to have been a part of it with Bob and with Steph and Dray and Klay, it’s amazing. So just because we’re not as good now doesn’t mean I’m going to just jump ship and say, ‘All right guys, see you later.’”

Regardless, coach Kerr doesn’t want the former No. 1 pick to be shipped away. When asked about that, he had Wiggins’ back and claimed he hopes he’s still on the roster by the time the deadline passes.

“I think he’s playing well,” Kerr told the media. “I’m very hopeful, and I expect him to be here when the trade deadline passes. He’s been a big part of our team now for years, helped us win a title year and a half ago, still has a lot of career ahead of him.”

Then again, Kerr also knows that it’s not always up to him, so he tries to be as transparent and honest with his players as possible when he knows they could be on the move:



“We try to recognize if guys are stressed out about it if their names are really being talked about,” Kerr said. “I’m always very, very honest with the players. I’ve had players over the years who I just share, very frankly, with them there is a chance that you’re going to get moved. It may or may not happen, but this is why.”

Wiggins has been way more efficient in his last five outings, averaging over 18 points per game on 60% shooting. Whether that’ll be enough for him to stay in the Bay area, at least until the end of the season, remains to be seen.

“He’s changed our team with his shot selection,” Kerr said. “We just feel different. We feel more stable, more calm. The game connects. Every bad or wild shot seems to turn into a layup or a 3 at the other end. Frankly, early in the season, Klay was taking a lot of bad shots. He knows that. We talked about it quite a bit. When Klay’s under control and taking good shots, we’re better as a team.”



Thompson is on the verge of testing free agency at the end of the season, and perhaps that was on the back of his mind. He seemed to be pressing and taking wild shots at times, which obviously led to even more struggles.

“I just felt like tonight I had to play the guys who were playing the best,” Kerr said, as quoted by Basketball Network. “I’ve been really patient and trying to get everybody organized into groups and give guys freedom and space, but tonight did not feel like a night to have a lot of patience. We needed some urgency, and that’s why I made the moves.”



Kerr decided to shake things up earlier in the game, benching Andrew Wiggins and Kevon Looney at the start of the third quarter. But Thompson’s exit made more headlines, considering everything he’s achieved with the organization throughout his fantastic career.

“I’m sure he’s disappointed,” Kerr said about Thompson. “It’s not easy being in that situation, and same with Loon and Wiggs, but these are tough nights. This is the NBA. It’s a really difficult league. It’s a dream job for these guys, but it’s also incredibly difficult. You get booed, benched, injured, traded, cut; it’s not easy.”

Getting benched for poor performance is not something Thompson is used to, but this time even the Warriors star himself admitted he was not playing well. According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, Thompson said that while it felt “strange,” to be on the bench, he admitted that he “deserved” it.



“Of course it frustrates me,” Thompson said. “You think I’m gonna just chill? I’m freaking competitive man. At the end of the day, I’m one of the most competitive people to put this uniform on. I can say that with confidence too. But whatever. I guess I didn’t bring it tonight. I deserved it.”



Thompson is not going through the best of times in the Bay area, averaging career-low numbers in points per game since his rookie season. Besides, his scoring production is also the lowest in his 11-year career.

Thompson’s decline comes in the final year of his contract with the Warriors, which is why many wonder what the future holds for him in 2024. According to NBA insider Shams Charania, the team offered Klay a contract extension in the offseason.

<h2>Curry Wants Warriors To Change</h2>



“It’s difficult for everybody,” Curry said. “It’s not that we can just roll the ball out and do the same thing we’ve been doing. Because, obviously, teams have adapted. There’s a certain expectation of how we play. We’ve been in situations this year where we’ve obviously lost some big leads because we haven’t been able to adapt quickly enough in those types of games when things aren’t going our way.”



The Warriors changed the way the game was played, but a lot has transpired ever since that moment. Now, all teams are trying to replicate what they did; there are no secrets anymore. And with them not getting any younger, it’s hard to keep up with them. Now, the clock is ticking in the Bay area:



“Results do matter,” Curry said. “Our starting lineup hasn’t been as great as it was before, for a couple of reasons probably. Wiggs [Wiggins] has been in and out. Matchups. And us not thinking we can just win games the same way we have all the time. You have to be open to because it’s not acceptable to have an off year. To mail it in and say, ‘We’ll figure it out later.’ That’s not who we are. It’s hard. But it’s supposed to be.”



<h2>Kerr Needs To Prove Himself</h2>



Steve Kerr has been under the scope for quite a while now. His job in charge of Team USA left a lot to be desired, and some are starting to question whether he was as good a coach as it seemed or just a byproduct of the Warriors’ depth and greatness.

He’s been unwilling to give the younger players a longer leash, even though both Moses Moody and Jonathan Kuminga look poised for bigger roles. Also, Trayce Jackson-Davis could give them some much-needed minutes as a backup big, yet he can’t seem to crack the rotation.

Kerr has gone to war with this core over and over, so it’s easy to understand his reluctance to shake things up. But times change, and a coach’s job is to adapt and overcome these circumstances, even if that means making uncomfortable decisions.

But things could have gone completely different, as the Dubs head coach thought Steph would end up elsewhere.



In an appearance on “Headliners” with Rachel Nichols, Kerr revealed the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/phoenix-suns">Phoenix Suns</a> could have selected Curry in the 2009 NBA Draft. By then, he was still the team’s general manager.



“I was the GM in Phoenix from 07-10, so your draft year was 09,” Kerr said to Curry, via Sports Illustrated. “We were looking at Steph and seeing Steve Nash, the next version. They were so alike in so many ways, and we had watched just become two-time MVP. So, all of the concerns that most of the people in the league had about Steph in terms of size and defense and athleticism, we saw everything we needed to see in that Steve had just done so much in the league.“



The Suns may have had Curry on their radar, but the Warriors were ahead of them in the cue. Golden State selected the Davidson product 7th overall, while Phoenix used its 14th pick on Earl Clark.

<h2>Steve Kerr says Suns had made a deal to get Curry</h2>



Since the Suns ran from behind in the draft order, they reportedly try and anticipate to any team getting Curry before them. Kerr said the team even struck a deal to land Steph before draft night.

“We tried to trade for him, and we thought we had a deal the night before the draft, it wasn’t completed,” Kerr added. “It was basically a discussion over the phone that we thought was done, so when he fell to 7, our draft room erupted. Because we thought the deal was in place and Steph was going to be a Phoenix Sun. It didn’t happen, it fell through. We knew how much we liked him, and that was part of the appeal when I was offered the job to come to the Warriors.“



Either way, the Warriors couldn’t be happier with their decision to draft Curry. Not only did he exceeded expectations, but also led the Warriors back to glory days. Even to this day, Steph continues to play a pivotal role in Steve Kerr’s team.

The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/golden-state-warriors" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Golden State Warriors </a>have now lost six games in a row, dropping their record to 6-8 after an impressive start to the season. And while they’ve been undermanned either because of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/stephen-curry" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stephen Curry’s</a> injury or <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/draymond-green" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Draymond Green’s</a> suspension, those who have been on the court have been less than impressive. 



Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins haven’t been able to get out of their early-season slump, scoring at a much less efficient clip than usual and with their overall numbers taking a dip.



That’s why, following their sixth consecutive defeat, coach Steve Kerr pivoted from his words of earlier in the season, finally admitting that he could look at making some lineup changes to get out of this funk.



“Yeah, it’s a possibility,” Kerr told the media. “You know, we love the lineup that we’ve started the last couple of years and we want to give that unit every opportunity to get going and we know when [Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson] are shooting the ball well, that lineup makes perfect sense.”

The coach hinted at potentially giving more minutes to rising rookie Brandin Podziemski, who has been quite impressive early in the season and even played 39 minutes against the Minnesota Timberwolves:



“I think he can play backup point guard,” Kerr said. “But I think he’s just a basketball player. So we can play him anywhere. The beauty of him is that the game connects when he’s out there. I’m excited to see him play with Steph and Klay. He’s gonna get those guys a lot of shots just with the way he plays, and the way the ball moves. So we’ll see. We’ll have to figure it out.”



<h2>They Need Draymond</h2>



The Warriors are 6-8 and aren’t playing their best basketball right now, but Kevon Looney and company aren’t ready to hit the panic button just yet. If anything, they know they have more than enough resources to turn the ship around.



“I wouldn’t say I’m worried,” Looney told The Athletic. “I guess you can say worried a little bit because you can’t be losing games like this at home. I think we’ve got enough to be good but we‘ve got to figure it out.”

Looney also talked about Draymond Green’s importance and how they need him to be back on the court, as he’s pretty much the quarterback of their defense and their vocal presence and leader:



“His voice,” Looney said. “He helps us make adjustments a lot. When things aren’t going right, he’s one of the best basketball minds in the league. So he’s seeing things and he’s able to adapt and tell coach, ‘We should do this instead’ and we adjust. He makes things happen like that. Or he can just do it all himself on the court where he sees things happen. He cleans up a lot of mistakes. I think we missed that a lot from him. And he pushes the pace. When things aren’t going right, we can’t score, he pushes (it) and gets guys open shots and different guys good looks.”

Green has two games left in his suspension before being eligible to come back, and while he’s definitely going to give them another strong punch on both ends of the floor, coach Kerr will have to dig deep into his bag of tricks to turn this around soon.

Selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, Steph eventually blossomed into arguably the greatest shooter in league history in front of the Dubs’ eyes. On top of that, he led the franchise to four NBA championships.



Of course, Curry hasn’t done it all by himself. After all, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson have been instrumental for the Warriors as well. But somehow, Steph always managed to stand out from the rest.

<h2>Kerr says Steph is the only reason he continues to coach the Dubs</h2>



“I thank my stars every day. Literally every day,. The ability to coach Steph right from the beginning, is the only reason I’m still here is because of the human being he is, not just the player and as talented as he is, but the tone that he sets for the whole group. It just makes my job so much easier,” Kerr told SiriusXM NBA Radio.

While it’s hard to discredit a coach who took a team to six NBA Finals in nine years and won four of them, it’s fair to wonder if his results would have been the same without Curry.



Kerr was hired as coach of the Warriors in 2014, when Curry was already making a name for himself in the league and looked ready to take a step forward in his career. From then on, the Dubs enjoyed the most successful era in their history.

Though Kerr gets recognition from the NBA world for making this team competitive for so long, the coach only has words of praise for Curry’s talent and work ethic.

“The stability that we have here over a decade, we wouldn’t have that without Steph,” he said. “I’m lucky to coach him, lucky to watch him every day. He’s been incredible in camp. He’s 35, he’s in the best shape of anybody on the team… The guy’s incredible. We are a week into training camp, and he’s out there, 35 years old, just destroying everybody. He’s amazing.”



Even at 35, Curry is still the biggest reason the Warriors continue to have championship aspirations. Last season he took them as far as he could, but his effort wasn’t enough to hide the team’s shortcomings.



The Dubs lacked consistency throughout the regular season and ended up losing to LeBron James’ Los Angeles Lakers in the Conference Finals. With Bob Myers gone, Mike Dunleavy stayed busy in the offseason, making a number of changes to see if the team can bounce back.



<h2>Warriors aim to redeem themselves in 2023-24</h2>



The Warriors made an important move by re-signing Green, which secured their core would stay together for at least another year. But perhaps their biggest decision was trading Jordan Poole for Chris Paul.

The Warriors wound up beating the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-lakers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Los Angeles Lakers</a>, but the most important part of the win was how seamless Paul’s fit was with the team, according to coach Steve Kerr.

“Chris [Paul] is amazing,” Kerr said. “He keeps the game so easy. He’s such a great passer. There’s a pace to the game that is fun to watch as a coach, where you just kind of know he’s just gonna be making the right play over and over. He understands when we need to pull it back and get into an action or play faster because he understands the rhythm of the game.”



Of course, there are still a lot of factors to consider. Will he continue to start once Draymond Green is back to full strength? Will he be pushed to the bench and be okay with that role?





Coach Kerr stated that he has six starters, and it seems like he truly meant it. It’ll be interesting to see how he deals with his roster and whether it takes a toll on their current chemistry.

Warriors: Steve Kerr has found a way to start Chris Paul next to Stephen Curry

He’s not a natural fit, and he didn’t get along with some of their players.



Personality and egos aside, Paul plays at a rather slow pace and does most of his damage on the halfcourt, and Steve Kerr prefers a run-and-gun, uptempo offense with a lot of movement.



That — plus <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/stephen-curry" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stephen Curry’s</a> presence — made most people think that Paul was going to come off the bench. The weeks have gone by, and Kerr still won’t offer any answers about that.

“We basically have six starters, the way I look at it, and only five can go each night,” Kerr said. “So, I haven’t decided yet what we’re gonna do, I wanna see training camp. We’re gonna try different combinations and take a look, but obviously, all six guys are gonna play a lot of minutes for us.”



Granted that Chris Paul is a legend of this game and he might not want to come off the bench. But he’s no longer in his prime, and it would be for his own sake, not just the team’s.

Besides the obvious upside of having a future Hall of Famer leading the second unit, that would also allow Paul to stay fresh and healthy in the playoffs, which has been a long-withstanding issue throughout his career.

“When it comes down to us and this tournament, we put ourselves in a great position, we got to the semifinals,” Kerr said. “We were right there, but we could not get enough stops. We did not defend well against Germany or Canada. That’s the bottom line. Every year, we are trying to build the best two-way team we can.”

Team USA is now reportedly preparing a superteam to face the 2024 Olympics, and maybe it’s time they finally stop overlooking the rest of the competition, as the rest of the world has gotten a lot better.

Edwards continues to work on his defense, and taking pride in guarding the rivals’ best scorer in this tournament will do wonders for his game. Don’t look now, but he might be next in the long list of NBA superstars.

So we share those clips and just remind him sometimes the best play is to just let the guy go and don’t pick up the foul.”



“Go get it, man,” Jackson replied. “It comes with it. If I’m gonna be less aggressive, I’m gonna have less blocks, I’m gonna bring less rim protection, and I’ma have less fouls with all that. Pick one or the other. Which one do you want? Do you want me to be great or not?”

At the end of the day, he’ll have no choice but to comply with his coach’s demands. But it’ll be interesting to see how he handles things when the Grizzlies face the Dubs next season.
