Iran, New Zealand settle for electric 2-2 draw in 2026 World Cup Group G

Iran and New Zealand went back and forth, but had to settle for a nerve-wracking draw to start their 2026 World Cup journeys in Group G.

In one of the most entertaining games of the 2026 World Cup so far, Iran and New Zealand shared the points in a 2-2 draw that left a sour taste in both teams’ mouths. To make it out of Group G, they will now need to take down either Belgium or Egypt.

Making their first World Cup appearance since 2010, New Zealand couldn’t secure their first-ever win at the tournament despite taking the lead twice against Iran. Elijah Just’s brace ultimately felt in vain, as the draw with the Persian Cheetahs did the All Whites few favors.

As for Iran, they aren’t much better off, either. Considering Egypt and Belgium also played to a stalemate, everything is level in Group G of the 2026 World Cup. That means both Iran and New Zealand likely need a win against one of Belgium or Egypt to advance to the next round.

Anything less may not be enough. Neither country has ever advanced past the group stage, and their odds took a significant hit with the draw. In more ways than one, the opening-game stalemate may have already put the Persian Cheetahs and All Whites behind the eight ball.

There will be six more minutes of added time before halftime.
