Soccer fans got used to seeing <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lionel-messi">Lionel Messi</a> play regularly in the last few weeks, with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/inter-miami">Inter Miami</a> traveling the world as part of their global preseason tour. But now, it’s time for the real competition to start with a new <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mls">MLS</a> campaign right around the corner.



Following a 1-1 draw in an exhibition against Leo’s boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys, Inter Miami will return to action on Wednesday, February 21, when they host Real Salt Lake in the Opening Game of the 2024 MLS season.



Messi is expected to play from the get-go as he left behind the muscle discomfort that ruled him out for some preseason friendlies. Needless to say, all eyes will be on him as this will be his first full MLS season, having joined Inter Miami in July 2023.



<h2>Inter Miami’s preseason raises many questions</h2>



While the club saw the 2024 preseason as an opportunity to bring its brand closer to fans craving to watch Messi play, the team performed poorly on the field. In fact, it won just one out of seven friendlies.

Following a goalless draw against El Salvador, the team went back to the US for a 1-0 loss to FC Dallas. Then, it flew to Saudi Arabia for a friendly tournament in Riyadh, losing both to Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr. The Herons managed to beat Hong Kong XI in their following friendly, but lost to Vissel Kobe on penalties in Japan before tying with Newell’s in Fort Lauderdale.

Inter Miami’s decision to travel the world was met with criticism, as it seemed to take a toll on their veteran stars. But somehow, that wasn’t enough to make people forget about <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/travis-kelce">Travis Kelce</a> yelling at and bumping into head coach <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/andy-reid">Andy Reid</a>. In fact, even Brett Favre shared his thoughts on the incident.



During the second quarter of the game, with the Chiefs losing to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-francisco-49ers">San Francisco 49ers</a>, the veteran tight end was seen furious at Reid for taking him out of the field before Isiah Pacheco fumbled the ball. 



Until then, Kelce had only one catch on one target for a gain of one yard. Both the player and Reid made it clear it’s all water under the bridge now, and Favre understands that emotions just got out of control for a second.



“Emotions play a big part of it, and sometimes they get the best of you, and that’s what happened there,” Favre told Jason Whitlock, via the Daily Mail. “It just was the biggest stage in the football world and he does that to arguably, maybe the greatest coach in history. You just can’t do that.“

The 65-year-old said the contact looked worse than it was, showing nothing but love for his player.



“He caught me off balance,” Reid said, via ESPN. “I wasn’t watching. He was really coming over [and saying], ‘Just put me in, I’ll score. I’ll score.’ So, that’s really what it was. I love that. It’s not the first time. I appreciate him. The part I love is he loves to play the game and he wants to help his team win. It’s not a selfish thing. That’s not what it is. I understand that. As much as he bumps into me, I get after him and we understand that. He just caught me off balance.”

Kelce, meanwhile, regretted his actions and made it crystal clear how much he appreciates Reid. The Chiefs star explained his reaction had nothing to do with the coach’s decisions nor his stats at that point of the game. “I didn’t care about my catches,” Kelce said. “I just wanted to … I wanted the score to be different. Coach has asked us to speak our minds and I just wanted to let him know how much passion I had for this team. He’s one of the best leaders of men I’ve ever seen in my life. And he’s helped me a lot with that, with channeling that emotion, with channeling that passion. I owe my entire career to that guy and being able to kind of control how emotional I get and just love him.”

<h2>Chiefs were happy to take the ball second</h2>



While Shanahan’s call makes sense, it looks like Kansas City always wanted the 49ers to receive first. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a> looked happy as soon as he heard San Francisco’s decision, with the quarterback later revealing the Chiefs’ idea was to win the game before the Niners could get the ball back.

Even if <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy">Brock Purdy</a>‘s offense managed to get seven points, Mahomes and company would have gone for a TD plus a two-point attempt to try and seal the deal at Allegiant Stadium. Either way, Kelce made it clear they had enough confidence on their defense to hold the Niners to a field goal.







“They said we wanted to receive and the ref looked at Fred [Warner] and said ‘Are you sure?’ And he said ‘Yes, I want to receive. I want the ball.’ I jumped out of my seat and said ‘Here we go, let’s go boys. They want to receive? We get second possession and know exactly what they want. Defense, hold them. Hold them to three (points). We’re going to go down here and win this thing, baby.&apos;”

The toss may be seen as a turning point in the 2024 Super Bowl, but in the end, the 49ers lost because they simply didn’t do what they needed to do. “Plan 1B is: We can make big changes if we had to. If this team were to slide all the way down and not do well at the end of the year, you know there’s going to be big changes. If we do really well, we might decide to go the other way,” he said.



The executive added that the team will keep an open mind and will be flexible in their approach to the offseason. Still, they’ll move the pieces they need to move to get back to their championship-winning ways:



“So, everything’s open. We have to be flexible. The goal is to not be a lottery team, ever. The goal is to be competitive. The goal is to win. And ideally, if it’s possible, to win championships or compete for championships,“ he added.

While <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/andy-reid">Andy Reid</a>‘s Kansas City Chiefs are getting nothing but praise, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kyle-shanahan">Kyle Shanahan</a> is facing the consequences of losing yet another <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/super-bowl">Super Bowl</a> at the helm of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-francisco-49ers">San Francisco 49ers</a>.



Many of 44-year-old’s decisions on Sunday are being questioned now that the Niners lost, especially his call to receive the ball first in overtime. Reid, however, defended his colleague’s choice, explaining there haven’t been enough Super Bowls with the new overtime rules to judge Shanahan’s call. 



“That’s the value of [statistical analysis coordinator] Mike Frazier. He does a great job with that. There’s two way you can go with it. You can either kick it off or you can receive it. I’m not sure there’s a right answer necessarily,” Reid said, via Pro Football Talk.



This was the first Super Bowl that went to overtime with the revised rules that guarantees both teams will have a chance of possession. After winning the toss, Shanahan ordered the Niners to receive the ball. It didn’t go to plan, as they had to settle with a field goal before <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a> led an incredible drive to find Mecole Hardman for the game-winning touchdown.

“Ours ended up being the right one. That easily could have gone the other way,” Reid explained. “That’s what we felt was the right thing to do. I’m never going to question Kyle because he’s brilliant. That was just something that we chose through out studies. We felt that was important.”

<h2>Kyle Shanahan explains why he chose to receive first</h2>



Speaking to reporters after the game, Shanahan explained to the media he wanted to anticipate to a potential sudden death scenario. With the 49ers receiving first, they would also get back the ball in the event the score was still tied after the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Chiefs</a>‘ possession.



“It’s just something we talked about,” Shanahan said, via NFL.com. “None of us have a ton of experience with it. But we went through all the analytics and talked to those guys. We just thought it would be better. We wanted the ball third. If both teams matched and scored, we wanted to be the ones who had the chance to go win. Got that field goal, so knew we had to hold them to at least a field goal, and if we did, then we thought it was in our hands after that.”

Shanahan has a fair point. The problem was that San Francisco failed to get the job done both in offense and defense. The Chiefs were happy to kick the ball first, as Mahomes later revealed their idea was to look for a touchdown followed by a two-point attempt before letting the Niners get the ball back. But it wasn’t necessary, as the Chiefs only needed to get into the end zone to get the upper hand.

Green and Durant seemed to have buried the hatchet ever since. They’ve done an interview to clear the air on their feud and played together in the Olympics, and they’ve even been spotted hanging out together.



Nonetheless, friendship doesn’t mean a thing in the heat of the battle, especially in the NBA. That’s why it wasn’t much of a surprise to see them going at it again when the Warriors beat the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/phoenix-suns" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Phoenix Suns.</a>



<h2>Draymond Green On His Feud With Kevin Durant</h2>



Green was seen yelling in Durant’s face after the Suns failed to get a shot off to get the win. Judging by the clip, it seemed like he called him the P-word, which obviously rubbed KD the wrong way:

“Everyone was questioning what I said to KD at the end of the game,” Green said on his podcast. “‘This is me. It’s me.’ I’m not going to share the other word that I said because, you know, that’s a spur-of-the-moment type of thing.”



Green admitted that he’s lost plenty of money for using that word so lightly. Then again, he was as unapologetic as always, and he’s just not going to change the way he handles hismelf on the court:



“You’re in a game and words come up,” Green continued. “But this is me. I do this. [I’ve] been doing this. Going to keep doing this. Which is the same thing that I said in that Clippers game years ago. [I’ve] been winning championships. [I’ve] been doing this. [I’m] going to keep doing this when you leave here. I didn’t lie, got fined a whole game check which is like $160,000 for saying that.”

Green’s antics have made his pockets lighter multiple times, and he’s even been suspended multiple times this season. Now, it seems like not even his friends are safe.

Though the Chiefs were defending champions, they weren’t favorites in three of their four games during the playoffs. However, Mahomes and company went on the road to eliminate the Buffalo Bills and the Baltimore Ravens. Then, the final chapter was written facing the 49ers.

<h2>Who is the favorite to win the Super Bowl in 2024 season?</h2>



The San Francisco 49ers (+450) are favorites to win the Super Bowl next season. The Kansas City Chiefs (+750) come second and that produced an surprising reaction from Patrick Mahomes when he heard the news.


 

 


“Just know that the Kansas City Chiefs are never underdogs. It just gives you a little added motivation going into the offseason (laughs). I’m always motivated. It doesn’t take much to get me motivated. I never feel like we’re underdogs because I believe we can win every game we play in. We have to continue to prove that every single year. It’s going to be a big challenge.”

Steve Kerr’s arrival in the Bay area changed everything for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/golden-state-warriors" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Golden State Warriors</a>. The team had already set a strong foundation with Mark Jackson, but they needed a change to get the monkey off their backs and become a legitimate contender.

“I want to be back,” Kerr told Logan Murdock. “I’ve made that clear every time I’ve been asked about it. The only thing I won’t talk about is just any detail of contract stuff, but I’ve been very open. I want to come back. Joe [Lacob has] told me he wants me back, so I think I’ll be back.”



Kerr talked about some of the players he’s had an opportunity to coach since taking the reins of the team in 2015, and he knows he’s become a Bay area legend:



“I coach an unbelievable group of guys,” Kerr said. “I love my coaching staff. I love Mike Dunleavy. Mike has been amazing to work with. Joe’s an incredible owner. When you think about what he’s done with his franchise and to have been a part of it with Bob and with Steph and Dray and Klay, it’s amazing. So just because we’re not as good now doesn’t mean I’m going to just jump ship and say, ‘All right guys, see you later.’”

The Warriors haven’t been at their best this season, but everybody knows better than to count them out. So, don’t sleep on coach Kerr now or ever, as he’s not going anywhere.

The San Francisco 49ers won the coin toss in overtime against the Kansas City Chiefs and chose to receive the ball. It’s important to remember that the rules had changed in the playoffs and now each team would get a possession regardless of what happened with their rival in the first series.


 

 


Considering this scenario, many experts thought the right call would have been to defer. That way, the 49ers and Kyle Shanahan would have known what they’ll had to do in their first possession. Nevertheless, the head coach was thinking way ahead in overtime.
