“No, [he] won’t have to back off,” Reid said when asked if the quarterback would have to back off from any practice reps, as quoted by Sports Illustrated. “He manages it, he stays on top of all that.”

Most of these departures came before the 2024 NFL season opener, but the team added another exit halfway through the campaign.



On Tuesday, November 5—the same day of the 2024 NFL trade deadline—the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Chiefs</a> released linebacker Cole Christiansen. The move was mentioned on the daily report of league transactions on the NFL’s official website.

While releasing Christiansen means losing a player who knows the system, his exit allows the Chiefs to free up a roster spot on their active squad. According to Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest, Christiansen was immediately re-signed to the practice squad.

<h2>The Chiefs’ recent moves to help Mahomes, Reid</h2>



Even though Kansas City was cash-strapped, general manager Brett Veach found ways to help Reid and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Mahomes</a> before the trade deadline. First, the front office seized a great opportunity on the market by landing star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins.



Shortly after that, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/nfl-news-chiefs-make-smart-and-necessary-move-to-help-andy-reid-patrick-mahomes-with-another-trade">Chiefs made a smart and necessary move</a> by restructuring right tackle Jawaan Taylor’s contract. That left the franchise with more wiggle room to make one last move.


 

 


With that cap space left thanks to Taylor’s restructured deal, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/nfl-news-chiefs-make-yet-another-big-trade-to-continue-helping-andy-reid-patrick-mahomes">Chiefs traded for Patriots star Josh Uche</a> to boost their defense. That’s why the team was relatively quiet on the deadline day, with its only move being Christiansen’s release.

<h2>Chiefs can still add another player </h2>



With only 52 players on their active roster, the Chiefs now can add another name to their squad. It remains unclear on who will occupy that spot, though. Safety Mike Edwards looked like a great option after being released by the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday, but the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/super-bowl">Super Bowl</a> LVIII champion with the Chiefs is ultimately heading to the Tennessee Titans.



The Chiefs still have a number of players on Injured Reserve, so this open spot could be saved for whenever one of these players is ready to return. Of course, another option is to make a practice squad promotion. We’ll have to wait and see what Reid ultimately prefers. In the meantime, Mahomes and company are enjoying a perfect 8-0 start to the 2024 NFL season that boosts their Super Bowl aspirations.

Five years after his controversial exit from the Chiefs, the 29-year-old is enjoying a triumphant return to Kansas City as the team’s primary running back during Isiah Pacheco’s absence. And while Hunt’s current form makes Mahomes extremely happy, the quarterback also warned the rest of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a> that the Chiefs’ running game will get even scarier when Pacheco returns.



“I’m happy for him to bounce back and come back here and then have this great start to the middle of the season here,” Mahomes said of Hunt’s performance after the Chiefs’ 30-24 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on ‘Monday Night Football’ before issuing his strong warning. “Whenever we get Isiah (Pacheco) back, it’s going to be a tough tandem for guys to tackle.”



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kareem-hunt">Hunt</a> played a key role in the Chiefs’ eighth win of the 2024 NFL season with 27 carries for 106 yards and the game-winning touchdown in overtime. In addition, he caught a pass from Mahomes for 11 yards.

“It’s been fun,” Mahomes said about his teammate, who spent five years in Cleveland before coming back to <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Kansas City</a>. “It’s been fun to watch, man. I mean, he’s come in the building – since he’s been here – and he’s just got after it every single day. He works his tail off, he prepares himself for the moment and then whenever we get down there in like [the] fourth quarter and the end of games, he’s going to make those runs. Five to six yards, seven yards, whatever it is and he’s going to finish. When you play that hard the entire game, it wears on the defense. I think guys are proud of the way he’s playing and the way he’s gone about his business this year.”

<h2>Andy Reid’s change of plans benefited Hunt, Mahomes</h2>



While Hunt ended up posting fantastic numbers on Monday, the truth is the night didnt’ start well for him. In the first half, he only gained 16 yards in seven carries. Chiefs head coach <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/andy-reid">Andy Reid</a>‘s change of plans for the second half saw Hunt take off with 20 carries for 90 yards, including the overtime TD.



“I didn’t call enough runs in the first half,” Reid explained to reporters after the game. “I told the offensive line that I was going to bank on them, and we need to get this thing started and get a little bit more balance in there in our attack.”

Reid appeared to heap more praise on the Chiefs’ offensive line, but still gave Hunt his deserved flowers. At the end of the day, it is crystal clear that he’s quickly become a reliable weapon for Mahomes.



“He wants the football,” Mahomes said. “I think that’s the biggest thing, is as the game goes on it’s like he starts feeling it and he starts going. There are certain situations where I might have throws on the outside and I’m like, ‘Man, I’m going to give this guy the football and let him go,’ because when he’s running, even though [it’s] six-yard [or] five-yard carries, they take a toll on the defense.“

“I think as he figures out the whole entire offense he’ll get even better, because there’s some times he’s going places and I’m like, man, there’s a time and a place for that, but that’s what makes him great,” Mahomes said. “You give him a chance down the field, he makes a play. . . . Late in the fourth quarter, the quarterback appeared to suffer an ankle injury and was helped off the field after throwing a touchdown pass to running back Samaje Perine. At that moment, Reid and everyone in Kansas City feared the worst for <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Mahomes</a>.



The quarterback, however, looked ready to come back after being checked by the doctors in the medical tent. He had to convince the coach though, as Reid looked ready to send backup QB Carson Wentz to the field in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Chiefs</a>‘ next possession. 



Speaking to reporters after the game, Reid admitted he doubted whether to accept Mahomes’ request. But in the end, the coach praised his quarterback’s attitude to play through pain.

“Well, when he was being carried off, I wasn’t too easy with it. I wasn’t sure exactly where he was going to be with it, but he might have the loosest ankles in America,” Reid said. “It’s ridiculous how he can come back from those things, and then he’s mentally tough on top of it. He’s a competitor. I told him I was going to take him out, and he probably wanted to fight me. He’s a tough kid.”

<h2>Mahomes reveals conversation with Reid before returning to the game</h2>



In his postgame press conference, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/nfl-news-chiefs-patrick-mahomes-provides-injury-update-clears-up-situation-with-andy-reid">Mahomes addressed his brief sideline conversation with Reid</a> before returning to the field: “Yeah, I thought he was joking. He said it and I was like, ‘Come on, we’re not doing this again.’ He trusts me. And once the doctors checked it out and I was able to get back and do the drops again, he let me get back on the field.”



“I was trying to run off the field, and they were telling me not to, and just kind of the football mentality is to get off the field, and we just scored a touchdown, and they told me to just, just take it slow. And that was sort of walking, and started feeling better. And obviously, after I got the re-spat, get that comfortability back, and then took a few drops and felt good.”



It could have been a terrible night for the Chiefs, but it ended up being great. Not only did Mahomes return to play, but he also led the team to a hard-fought, 30-24 victory over the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/tampa-bay-buccaneers">Bucs</a> in overtime.



<h2>Mahomes reveals how he came back from the injury</h2>



Tampa Bay could’ve gone for two with less than 30 seconds in the game to try and take the lead, but opted for the extra point to make things 24-24 in regulation. Mahomes had the Chiefs leading by a touchdown thanks to the play that almost injured him. Fortunately, it wasn’t serious enough to prevent him from returning for the overtime win.

“I was obviously running for the goal line,” Mahomes said. “I was kind of committed to running the football, and at the last second, saw Samaje (Perine), so I kind of awkwardly rolled the ankle a little bit. Definitely scary. I think it hurt more just because the same ankle I rolled last week, so it scared me a little bit. But once I kind of took my took my breath and kind of calmed down a little bit, ended up being not too bad. We were able to go in there, kind of get the re-spat, and go back on the football field.”

<h2>Mahomes provides Reid, Chiefs an encouraging injury update</h2>



Seeing Mahomes play through an injured ankle is not new, as the Chiefs star has already done it during the 2023 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a> playoffs. But to bring some relief to Reid and the fans, the quarterback made it clear that it’s far less painful this time.



“The one in the playoffs a couple of years ago was a little bit how I got tackled, it got stuck, and it hurt a lot more,” Mahomes said. “I can move. I still have mobility in my ankle, and I still did after this game. And so obviously you’ll sleep, and probably get a little swelling tomorrow. It’s a short week, but you go in there and take care of it and be prepared to play next week.”



Mahomes and Reid have the Chiefs as the only undefeated team in the 2024 NFL season with a perfect 8-0 record. This brilliant streak will once again be put to the test when Kansas City welcomes the Denver Broncos to Arrowhead on Sunday.
