The uncertainty surrounding Klay Thompson‘s NBA future is coming to an end after he and the Dallas Mavericks reached a buyout agreement, with the veteran guard expected to join the Miami Heat.

According to Shams Charania of ESPN, Thompson is close to finalizing his move to South Beach. “Klay Thompson is expected to sign with the Miami Heat after he clears waivers upon a contract buyout with the Dallas Mavericks,” Charania reported. The potential arrival would create a formidable starting lineup for Miami.

Miami Heat predicted starting five:

  • PG: Davion Mitchell
  • SG: Klay Thompson
  • SF: Andrew Wiggins
  • PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo
  • C: Bam Adebayo

Potential deal details between Thompson, Mavericks, and Heat

Details about the buyout have emerged, showing how Thompson could reach an agreement with the Miami Heat and confirming that a deal appears increasingly likely ahead of schedule within the franchise’s framework.

According to Shams Charania, Thompson and the Mavericks navigated a buyout from his $17.5 million expiring salary after the four-time NBA champion made it clear to Dallas that he wanted to play for a contender, a detail that directly interests Miami.

According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the Heat have $8.9 million of their traded player exception (TPE) remaining to offer him, making it plausible that this matches the exact amount he surrendered in his buyout with Dallas. However, the official buyout amount is still pending.

Heat positioned as championship contenders

All signs indicate the Heat built a roster designed to be top contenders for an NBA championship. Although many fans consider several players to be washed following down seasons—as is the case with Thompson and Andrew Wiggins—their proven track record suggests that quality surrounding talent might be what they needed.

The four-time NBA champion averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 21.7 minutes last season, shooting 38.3% from three-point range across 69 games. While those numbers fall below his prime years, the presence of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo inside the paint will generate far more open opportunities for him outside the arc.
