The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/golden-state-warriors" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Golden State Warriors</a> are 10-12 through the first quarter of the season. They’re sitting on the 11th spot in the Western Conference, and look far from the team that won the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> championship just two years ago, even though they have the same core.



The Warriors have gotten off to strong starts to games but they seem to run out of gas down the stretch. They’ve blown big leads over and over, and coach<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/steve-kerr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Steve Kerr</a> can’t seem to find his best rotations.



The team has talked about this slow start over and over, but with 25% of the regular season already on the books and an early exit in the In-Season Tournament, it seems like they’re past talking right now.



That’s why Kerr and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/stephen-curry" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stephen Curry</a> opened up about how they need to take a deep look in the mirror and be better once and for all. There’s still time, but they cannot wait any longer.

<h2>Warriors Are Frustrated</h2>



“It’s a pattern right now,” Kerr said. “I watched this same group win a championship a year and a half ago. They’re champions. But they’re not playing like it. I’m not coaching like it. We have to figure this out.”



Curry isn’t usually pessimistic, but he hasn’t looked as joyful as per usual. The greatest shooter of all time has had enough, and he wants the team to act like it and not just talk like it:



“I don’t know, man,” Curry said. “Gotta figure out how to stop talking about it and do it. Or else you’ll be into the new year with the same problems. I’m kinda sick of talking about it.”



<h2>Thompson Is Still Confident In The Team</h2>



Klay Thompson, on the other hand, isn’t as blunt and as pessimistic. He still has plenty of confidence in the team’s ability to turn things around, and even though he understands why the players are frustarted, he knows they’ve been there and done that way too many times:

“(The criticism) It’s probably warranted,” Thompson said. “But I can’t subscribe to that stuff though. I’ve been in this business so long. You just got to do what you can do every day to get better. Can’t listen to the outside noise. It’ll drive you nuts. Just work on yourself. Be the best you can for your team.”



Thompson’s shooting slump is one of the main reasons behind the Warriors’ woes. He has been up and down this season, and having him and Andrew Wiggins posting career-worst numbers, scoring and efficiency-wise, has raised plenty of questions about their future in the starting lineup.



Moses Moody and Jonathan Kuminga seem ready to break out, yet coach Kerr hasn’t given them a longer leash in favor of his veterans. Then again, they might put him in a tough spot if they continue to outplay their more experienced teammates.

There are still 60 games left in the season, and the Warriors have proven that they cannot be counted out, regardless of how bad things look. Even so, they cannot expect different results if they continue to do the same things over and over.

His importance to the team was so evident that they didn’t even make the playoffs in the two years he was out with injuries, and they won an <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> championship as soon as he came back.



His perimeter defense, efficient shooting, and his ability to get hot in the blink of an eye had made him the perfect complement next to <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/stephen-curry" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stephen Curry</a> and Draymond Green.



Nonetheless, as good as he’s been for the team over his career, he’s not being very helpful right now. Perhaps his contract year has gotten on his head or perhaps he’s entering the decline of his career. Whatever the case, he hasn’t been the same player this season.



That’s why multiple fans and analysts have speculated about his future. The Warriors are in win-now mode and cannot afford any more setbacks, so some believe they could pull the plug on him and find him a trade suitor.

<h2>Warriors Won’t Trade Thompson</h2>



NBA insider Zach Lowe even reported that several executives reached out to him wondering whether Thompson could become available and showing an interest in his services:



“I’ve had four executives from other teams in the last 72 hours asked me, ‘Would they ever trade Klay Thompson?’ And the reason they’re asking is because teams see somewhat of an opportunity there,” he said on The Lowe Post. “In terms of, ‘Can we get involved in a deal? Would they have to attach an asset to trade Klay Thompson if they want to get meaningful win-now talent with multiple years left on their contract in exchange for Klay Thompson?”



However, as big a market as there could be for the talented shooting guard, Lowe wanted to make it loud and clear that the Warriors have no intention whatsoever to trade him:



“To be clear, the Warriors do not want to trade Klay Thompson,” added the insider. “They have no desire to do it. I would bet heavily against it ever happening.”

<h2>Thompson Will Test Free Agency</h2>



Still, that doesn’t mean this will be the end of the Thompson-Warriors saga. They failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension in the offseason, and Adrian Wojnarowski claims he could even test unrestricted free agency to work out a new deal next summer:



“I’m told that there has been absolutely no progress on a Klay Thompson extension in Golden State. That they are both still apart on years and money,” said Wojnarowski. “And there’s a very real possibility that Klay Thompson goes into free agency next summer without a deal.”

Thompson is currently averaging 15.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.8 three-pointers per game on 40/36/87 shooting splits, and he’s not getting any younger, but he could still fetch a lucrative deal. Then again, it would be strange to see him walking away from the Warriors after all these years.

<h2>Stephen A. Smith Rips Thompson Over Latest Comments</h2>



Needless to say, those comments didn’t rub a lot of people the right way. ESPN pundit Stephen A. Smith, for one, thinks Thompson should take a deep look in the mirror and work on his game instead of going against the fans:



“This is one of the greatest shooters in NBA history,” Smith said on First Take. “But that ain’t what you’ve been looking like. You’ve been playing like hot trash. That is the bottom line. We expect better from Klay Thompson. We know what kind of a champion he is. And respectfully, that right there what he said before the game last night, is a flat-out cop-out.”



Smith reaffirmed his belief in Thompson being one of the best players in the game, which is why he believes his careless attitude isn’t doing him any favors right now:



“That’s about you not owning up to the fact that you‘re not doing the kind of things we know you can do,” Smith continued. “We know you’re capable of doing. And you’re just shrugging it off like you don’t give a damn. Maybe you should give a damn.“

<h2>His Future Is Under The Scope</h2>



Truth be told, Thompson is one of the players under the most pressure in the league right now. He failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension, and he’s likely to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.



He’s always talked about his desire to stay in the Bay area for the remainder of his career, but the Warriors seem to have second thoughts about signing him to a big contract. Needless to say, this kind of play isn’t helping his case to get the payday he’s looking for.

Thus far, the four-time NBA champion is averaging roughly over 15 points per game on 40% from the floor, which is far below his career averages. The team owes him a lot, and they should do right by him. Of course, a lot of that had to do with the fact that Curry missed a couple of games with a knee injury, and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/draymond-green" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Draymond Green</a> served a five-game suspension. However, even in the wins and even at full strength, Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins have failed to play up to their standards.



They’re both going through a big slump, which is why Tim Kawakami of The Athletic asked Klay his thoughts about coach Steve Kerr sticking with his current lineup. Unsurprisingly, the four-time NBA champion didn’t like the question one bit:



“What, do you want him to bench me?” Klay responded. “Or bench Wigs? I mean, you can suggest it, that’s fine. But thank Steve, I guess, I don’t know. Sometimes you earn these things, like patience and time to find yourself. I think history is on our side when it comes to that stuff.”

<h2>Thompson Doesn’t Care About The Naysayers</h2>



Thompson has always been a fierce competitor and has never hesitated to clap back at his critics. This time isn’t the exception, and he won’t let the haters steal his focus:



“I don’t care what people say,” Klay said. “It’s like, they don’t do what we do. They can’t do what we do. That’s why they talk. Why would I? Like, come on. I don’t care what people say at this point in my life, ha! Next question.”



Even so, it’s a fact that he and Wiggins need to do better. Klay is averaging 15.0 points on 40% shooting, almost five fewer points than his career average. Wiggins, on the other hand, is averaging 11.8 points on 25% from beyond the arc and 51% from the free-throw line.



The Warriors still have Chris Paul and Jonathan Kuminga leading the way in the second unit, and they could mix things up to find a stronger scoring punch in the starting five. Even so, they’re not likely to make any major changes right now.



<h2>Kerr Has Faith In His Stars</h2>



Coach Kerr is one of the greatest shooters in NBA history, but, like all shooters, he also went through some major slumps. That’s why he knows just how important it is for a player to keep getting his touches to get his groove back:

“Having been a player myself, I always wanted my coaches to show confidence in me through a slump,” Kerr said. “So I know how much that means to a player, when a coach stands by you. And then we just won a championship a year and a half ago with Wigs and Klay playing a huge role.”



This current Warriors’ lineup has played together for quite a while and even won a championship together, so Kerr obviously has faith in them. Even so, he didn’t rule out the possibility of making a change at some point:



“Obviously, that five-man (starting) unit that we talk about from last year, that started all last year, was the best one in the league,” the coach stated. “That’s a big sample size. I’m really going to believe in that group and believe in those guys who accomplished so much for a long time. As a coach, it’s just a matter of recognizing if you have to make a change of some sort, when is that juncture, when is that critical point in the season where alright, we’ve seen enough, we’ve gotta do something different.”

The Warriors’ pace-and-space offense hasn’t been at its best this season, playing at the 14th-fastest pace in the league (99.0) and being 12th in the league in scoring (114.2 PPG). Also, they average the fourth-most turnovers per game (15.0), which obviously hampers their offense.

During a practice in October 2022, Draymond Green punched Jordan Poole in the face after a heated argument. When the Golden State Warriors were eliminated by the Lakers in the playoffs, Green admitted that the incident was the key factor in their failure to win the championship.

<h2>Warriors Are Playing The Waiting Game</h2>



Thompson and the Warriors were unable to agree on terms for an extension in the offseason. Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that there’s a significant gap between his aspirations and what the team is offering right now, although they do intend to do right by him:



“The Warriors and Klay Thompson have been discussing an extension,” Charania said. “From what I’m told, there’s a significant gap in years and money. The negotiations right now, from what I’m told, they’re at a dead point (…) In an ideal world, the Warriors want to take care of him. They want to pay him. But they also want to see how this season goes.”



This is a similar situation to what they went through with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/draymond-green" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Draymond Green</a> last season. They eventually agreed to a multi-year extension, rewarding him for everything he’s done for the franchise, but it take some time.



<h2>Lacob Isn’t Worried</h2>



Likewise, team owner Joe Lacob doesn’t want the fans to read too much into this situation. He recently talked about his desire to get a deal done with Thompson, and he thinks things will eventually figure themselves out:

Lacob thinks things will eventually run their natural course, and as much as he or the fans would love to get a deal done right now, that’s not the way things work in this business:

<h2>Thompson Won’t Be Distracted</h2>



Likewise, Thompson already told The Athletic that he doesn’t want his contract talks — or lack thereof — to get in his way this season. He’s thirsty for revenge after last season’s elimination left a sour taste on his mouth, and he’ll keep basketball first and foremost for now.



“It’s not going to be a thing,” the shooting guard said. “The fact that I’m going into my 13th season – that alone – it gives me such peace of mind. Granted, I’ve made money, I’ve been able to take care of my family, myself, the people I love. But when I started playing this game, I never once thought I’m playing the game because I’m going to be rich and famous. Never did.”

Thompson is one of the few players who could take 6+ three-pointers a night and still shoot over 40% from beyond the arc. He scored 60 points on 11 dribbles, and while his offensive game is often overlooked and underrated, there’s literally no shot he cannot make.

“Well, this is why I left, first of all,” Myers told Malika Andrews. “A lot of times, people will say it’s just business, but this is not a just business situation. Myers explained that there are a lot of factors that come into place when doing this kind of deal. It’s not as easy to think with a cool head when you already have a bond and a relationship with the guy you’re supposed to do business with.



Adrian Wojnarowski recently confirmed that Thompson is going to test free agency. There has been little-to-no progress between both parties regarding a contract extension, and Thompson stated that he won’t let any of that distract him throughout the course of the season.



New GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. was Bob Myers’ pupil, so chances are that he’s actively trying to get him a new deal, but that’s not going to happen any time soon. Thompson could use his leverage by meeting with several teams, and there’s no doubt that he could fetch a very lucrative contract and get plenty of touches somewhere else, even if he doesn’t have as big a shot to win a ring as he does in the Bay area.

Though the Warriors also seemed to face the risk of losing Green this offseason, Woj believes this is the first “real test” of keeping together their core. Myers listened carefully to Woj on ESPN’s NBA Countdown, and later shared his thoughts on this situation.

<h2>Bob Myers addresses Klay Thompson’s contract situation</h2>



“Well, this is why I left first of all,” Myers said with a laugh when asked by Malika Andrews what was the path forward for Thompson and the Warriors. “A lot of times people will say it’s just business, but this is not a just business situation.”



Myers went on to mention how important Thompson is for the team, mentioning that he will have a statue outside Chase Center one day and pointing out the fact that he contributed to multiple championships, which is why fans love him.



Thompson was drafted 11th overall by the Warriors in the 2011 NBA Draft, only a year before Myers was promoted to general manager. From then on, both were part of the greatest chapter in franchise history, which saw the Dubs win four NBA championships in eight years.

But it wasn’t all sunshine and roses for Klay, who spent more than two years on the sidelines due to injury. The team, however, has been there for him at his lowest, giving Thompson a five-year, $190m extension even after he suffered a torn ACL in 2019. 



“It’s not so simple as money and years,” Myers said. “This is why it was hard for me, because you have relationships with these people – especially if you succeeded with them. That core has been together for 12 years and that’s just so rare now, it just doesn’t happen. So, this is a delicate negotiation. From what I know and see, he wants to stay. They want him to stay. Does it mean it will happen? But it is a test. It is certainly a test as Woj said and this is probably the first real test.”

The Warriors have always understood how important is Thompson for their organization, which is why they stuck to him through and thin. But next year he’ll be 34, so it remains to be seen how much they’re willing to offer to make him stay.

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/klay-thompson" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Klay Thompson’s</a> importance for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/golden-state-warriors" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Golden State Warriors</a> became even more obvious when he wasn’t on the floor. They went from five straight trips to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> Finals to not even making the playoffs in the two years he was out nursing injuries.



One could only assume that the front office would take a similar approach with him than they did with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/draymond-green" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Draymond Green. </a>There was never a doubt that they would sort things out and get an extension done so he could retire in the Bay area.



Nonetheless, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN pulled the brakes on that speculation. According to the renowned pundit, there’s a big gap between both parties right now, and Thompson could even test unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career:



“I’m told that there has been absolutely no progress on a Klay Thompson extension in Golden State. That they are both still apart on years and money,” said Wojnarowski. “And there’s a very real possibility that Klay Thompson goes into free agency next summer without a deal.”

<h2>Contract Talks Won’t Affect Thompson</h2>



Even so, Thompson won’t let this situation get in the way of his focus and preparation for the upcoming campaign. Being the son of a former NBA champion, he never played for fame or fortune, and that won’t change at this point in his career:



“[The contract dispute] It’s not going to be a thing,” Thompson told The Athletic. “The fact that I’m going into my 13th season — that alone — it gives me such peace of mind. Granted, I’ve made money, I’ve been able to take care of my family, myself, the people I love. But when I started playing this game, I never once thought I’m playing the game because I’m going to be rich and famous. Never did.”



Klay has made it loud and clear that he wants to win another championship before calling it a career. And he’s done too well in his career to let a contract dispute shift his focus from what’s actually important:



“I don’t need to go into this year and … I know if I just do my job and I’m in shape and I compete at my highest level, I’m going to make money in this league for a long time,” he continued. “So I don’t worry about it. I’m blessed beyond measure. Obviously you want to make the most in the window you have as an athlete. But I’m not going to let that get in the way of winning a championship. When you win, everything else will be taken care of.”

<h2>The Warriors Need Thompson</h2>



Even if he’s no longer the perennial All-Star he used to be and injuries have taken a toll on his speed and stamina, Thompson is still a pivotal part of Kerr’s system. His perimeter defense is only topped by his ability to knock down shots from beyond the arc, and his presence takes so much pressure off <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/stephen-curry" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stephen Curry’s</a> shoulders.



Thompson has always put his team first, knowing that he could be a primary scorer in pretty much every other franchise. His career averages of 19.8 rebounds, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 3.1 three-pointers per game on 45/41/85 shooting splits don’t paint the whole picture of his impact on the court.

The Warriors’ front office has usually done right by their stars, and they owe Thompson a lot. So, even if they fail to strike a deal during the season and he winds up testing free agency waters, it wouldn’t be shocking to see them finding some middle ground and reaching an agreement eventually.

That’s why it seems like it’s just a matter of time before they do the same with Klay Thompson, another integral part of their dynasty. Both parties have talked about it, but nothing has happened yet.



That’s why the shooting guard doesn’t seem to be too worried about his future with the organization, and he knows he’s more than likely to stay with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/stephen-curry" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stephen Curry</a> for years to come.

“I think it’s possible [I sign an extension soon] and if not, life is still great,” Thompson said, according to Bleacher Report. “Like, I’m still playing basketball, in my 13th year in the NBA, so I have no complaints. Whatever the future has in store, like, I’ve done so many great things in this uniform, and I know there are many more memories to create. Whatever happens, life is great. I can’t complain. I’ve had an incredible run here, and I look forward to making more great memories with the guys.”



Right now, it seems like the only thing going through Klay’s and the Warriors’ minds is to win another NBA championship. They have the pieces to do it, and they’re still salty about last season.
