College basketball has evolved in recent years, and many athletes, coaches and programs have learned how to navigate the modern era of the competition. Kentucky Wildcats coach Mark Pope has watched these changes firsthand, which has prompted him to have a clear approach when it comes to coaching.&nbsp;



Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals have revolutionized the way athletes view their careers and how programs recruit top prospects. “I believe it’s the greatest time to be a college coach,” Pope said. “It’s the most challenging, but also the most rewarding. The players need us more than ever before.”



Pope returned to his alma mater for the 2024-25 season. He took over from John Calipari, but filling the shoes of his predecessor isn’t the only challenge he’s faced so far.&nbsp;



The Wildcats remain a dangerous team in the SEC, but it remains to be seen if they are able to have a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

Mark Pope’s Kentucky Wildcats are in the middle of preparations for the 2025-26 NCAA season, in which the 10-year veteran coach will try to elevate the team’s game and take it further than the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament.



Pope took over from legendary John Calipari last season, and his first season in front of the team was solid. They posted a 24-12 (10-8 in the conference) record, in a season that ended with a 78-65 loss to the Tennessee Volunteers.



After eight weeks of summer practice, Pope decided to give his players some free time before the semester starts. However, not every player has paid attention to his indications, and one has had trouble keeping himself out of the gym.

“We tried to kick everybody off campus. To try to get everybody off campus to go home and refresh.” Pope said. “And then I’m sitting here in the office, and Denzel Aberdeen is down there in a full sweat getting a ton of work done. Reece Potter is out there getting shots. I mean, you think about DA. He’s got a national championship ring on his finger, and in our one week off, where we’ve told these guys they’re banned from the gym, these guys are still breaking in. That’s the type of group we have.”



Aberdeen averaged 7.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game last season, helping the Gators win it all in a magical season.

JuJu Watkins is already considered a star of women’s <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball">college basketball</a>, but the USC Trojans’ guard is paying close attention to the players coming behind her. Watkins played her second college season with the Trojans, looking more mature on the floor and eager to lead her squad to the national championship.&nbsp;



Unfortunately, an ACL injury derailed her plans and Watkins will miss the 2025-26 NCAA season while her Trojans battle to return to the national tournament.&nbsp; Meanwhile, the sophomore guard is spending time watching younger players and she has identified one who could make a strong impact on the game soon.



Watkins, who averaged 23.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.8 blocks last season, knows there is a generation of players who can elevate the game even more.



<h2>JuJu Watkins commends high school player&nbsp;</h2>



Watkins attended an Overtime girls’ squad event in June, where she had the chance to watch and coach talented high school players. During a conversation with Jordyn Palmer, a high school player who played in front of Watkins during that event, the USC star lauded a five-star prospect in the 2027 class.

Palmer asked Watkins which players she watched at the OT’s event grabbed his attention, with the Los Angeles native going with Jezelle Banks.&nbsp;



“I think GG (Jezelle Banks),” Watkins said. “She’s just super tough, shifty, and crafty. I’m excited to see her play again.”



Jezelle Banks is a guard for St. James Performance Academy who participated in the OT Select Championship with Team YGE. She scored 51 points in three games, making a solid impression on Watkins and others.

Paunovic comes from KK Zlativor in the ABA League 2, where he averaged 8.8 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists. Dan Hurley commented on this, lauding the Serbian’s prior experience.

“Uros is a guy we liked on film,” Hurley said, per UConn men’s basketball portal. “He’s got a ton of experience as a 22-year-old; he’s been a starter professionally in the top division in Serbia, a guard who’s pretty good with the ball, can shoot and pass, and plays with real emotion on the floor. We’re looking forward to having him join the Huskies.”



Paunovic joins the likes of Braylon Mullins, Eric Reibe, Jacob Furphy, Jacob Ross, and Rrezon Elezaj. It’ll be quite interesting to watch his journey and how he adapts.

“Though not an explosive athlete, Anthony’s skill is what sets him apart from other players in this class,” Womack wrote. “He’s an advanced shot maker, and can do so off of the dribble, off of screens, and in spot-up situations. Where he can improve his game is his handle, which can be a bit suspect at times. He is also light for his frame – he weighs around 190 pounds, and if he wants to be able to finish at the rim more easily, he will have to put in work in the weight room. Anthony has potential to be a first-round pick, likely after he plays two years of college basketball.”

“The headliners of the 2026 class are Kansas guard Darryn Peterson (ESPN’s current No. 1-ranked prospect) and BYU wing A.J. Before the season starts, the incoming senior continues to make moves off the field. Fudd, who recorded 13.6 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game last season, became public with Paige Bueckers, and has shared details of her relationship with the Dallas Wings’ star.&nbsp;

Seth Curry made two out of five threes, while Steph went 3-of-5, and Fudd only missed one shot to beat her competition.



Fudd is coming off her best season from deep, as she made 43.6% of her attempts. She shoots 40.7% from deep for her career, a number that should have warned the Currys about what was coming.



The Huskies will defend their national championship in the upcoming season. Fudd took over from Bueckers as the team’s leader, set to take the squad to the promised land again.&nbsp;

Former No. 1 overall pick John Wall teased a return to his alma mater, the University of Kentucky, this offseason. Wall announced his retirement from the NBA this week and was later introduced as one of the analysts for NBA on Prime.&nbsp;



After an 11-year career, whose last team was the Los Angeles Clippers, Wall couldn’t make a return to the league and decided to look for new challenges. Added to his work with Amazon, the former Washington Wizards star is planning to return to Kentucky to help Mark Pope prepare the new generation of players.



Wall played one season with the Wildcats, averaging 16.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game, shooting 46.1% from the field, 32.5% from deep and 75.4% from the free-throw line. He’s now set to help Pope and teased a potential return to Lexington as soon as this fall.&nbsp;

While John Calipari isn’t in front of the team anymore, Wall still has a strong relationship with the school. He said they allowed him to fulfill his dreams and now wants to give back.&nbsp;

“Kentucky’s always home for me. There’s always love. That’s the school I went to, the jersey I put on,” said Wall. “They gave me the opportunity to reach one of my goals and dreams in life to play college basketball, and play on one of the biggest levels for one of the best schools in the country, and a good opportunity to go to the league. So yeah, I’m definitely coming back.”



Additionally, Wall said Pope extended him an invitation to work out with the new guys.&nbsp;



“Mark Pope wrote me this year to ask if I’d come down for the summer if I get the opportunity to play some pick-up or just work out with some of the guys, and I’m gonna try to find time,” Wall told Jones.



John Wall was one of the greatest players in program history, and it’s refreshing to see him go back to his home and give back to the Wildcats after all these years.

After a legendary 19-season WNBA career, Sue Bird received a giant honor from her only team in the league, the Seattle Storm. The retired guard led the franchise to four WNBA championships while becoming a 13-time All-Star, eight-time All-WNBA, and three-time assists champion, among other accolades.



Bird was already a Hall of Famer before the Storm honored her with a rare feat that not even many NBA legends have. On Sunday, her statue was unveiled outside Climate Pledge Arena. The team held the ceremony ahead of a duel against the Phoenix Mercury.&nbsp;



Shortly after, they shared a video on Instagram, which showed Geno Auriemma paying homage to his former UConn Huskies player. Auriemma and Bird won two NCAA championships together and their relationship has been close ever since.

“Where Boozer may – may – have the edge over Flagg is in closing, which Flagg did not do very well. That’s not to knock him – keep in mind that he was a year ahead of schedule and, like almost all 17-year-olds, physically immature. He’s got work to do there,” he said.



Flagg couldn’t take Duke to the top of the division, but still left the bar really high for Boozer.&nbsp;Whether he’ll be able to live up to those expectations remains to be seen.

Mark Pope reached the 500-day mark in front of the Kentucky Wildcats, leaving positive impressions after his first season with his alma mater. Pope was signed to replace iconic coach John Calipari and led the team to a 24-12 record and an NCAA tournament berth.



It’s been 10 years since his head coaching journey began with Utah Valley, where he posted a 77-56 record in four seasons. Pope took over Brigham Young in 2019, leading them to a 110-53 record, which opened the doors to join the Wildcats.



Kentucky lost to the Tennessee Volunteers in the Sweet 16, ending a solid first season for Pope. The challenge should be harder now, and Pope is well aware that they need to aim higher.

“If I was going to grade myself, I’d grade myself a B or B-. Our job was to go win it. We didn’t get that done. I felt like we did a lot of things really, really well that I’m very proud of,” Pope said. “I felt like, as a head coach, I failed our team a little bit in terms of picking and choosing the places where we’re going to have a relentless standard where anything less than that is going to be successful.“



“One of our big keys going into this season is that we’re going to have a standard that we will refuse to accept anything less in some facets of the game that are controllable. I think we are going to do a much better job with that,” he added.



Kentucky has renewed expectations, and Pope is hungry to go further than last season.
