<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/bryce-young">Bryce Young</a> and the Carolina Panthers prepare to face Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins in Week 5. However, arguably their best player won’t be suiting up after suffering an injury.



Ian Rapoport of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFL</a> Network reported that running back Chuba Hubbard is dealing with a calf injury and is expected to miss Sunday’s game vs. Tagovailoa’s Dolphins. Hubbard is a key component on this offense as he is a workhorse. Scripts don’t matter against Hubbard since he always gets all of his snaps regardless.



It seems like Hubbard’s absence won’t be for this week only, as it seems the calf injury is worse than initially thought and could sideline him for longer. With this, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/carolina-panthers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Panthers</a> are forced to go with a backup plan, but that backup plan is not that bad.



<h2>Rico Dowdle season is upon us</h2>



During the offseason, the Panthers signed Rico Dowdle to be Hubbard’s backup. Some even expected a committee between both, but he’s played only 35% of the snaps. However, Dowdle had more than a 1,000 rushing yards last season with the Cowboys. He is by no means a scrub.

Dowdle will now have the chance to prove to head coach Dave Canales that he deserves more snaps. To be able to run the football is key for this team as Bryce Young is not a quarterback you want throwing 40 times a game.


 


<h2>The Panthers have a serious QB problem</h2>



Carolina has a huge issue on quarterback. Bryce Young was the number one pick but he doesn’t play like one. He has too many inconsistencies. One day he will win you the game, the next week he will cost you the game. The team can’t rely on him.



Young is completing 60.4% of his passes for 753 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. However, three of those touchdowns came in Week 2. The other alternative is giving up on Young and trusting NFL veteran Andy Dalton, which is not the greatest backup at this point in his career.

Bryce Young’s time in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/carolina-panthers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Carolina </a>might be coming to an end if the team continues to struggle to win games. The former No. 1 overall pick showed that he could be a capable quarterback last season, overcoming tough moments, including being benched in favor of Andy Dalton early in the campaign.



The Alabama product went 234 of 384 for 2,403 yards and 15 touchdowns against nine interceptions. This season, he’s gone 87 of 144 for 753 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions.



The Panthers enter the Week 5 matchup against the Miami Dolphins with a 1-3 record, and people are already wondering how long they will wait for Young and coach Dave Canales to turn things around.

In a recent edition of All Dolphins Podcast, Charlotte Observer columnist Scott Fowler talked about Young’s future with the Panthers. Fowler believes that the project could come to an end if Young fails to beat the Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys in the next two matchups.&nbsp;

“I mean, they’re not quite ready to give up on him or anything. but they just look around the league. He was picked No. 1 overall in 2023. They gave up a ton to move up from number 9 to number 1. So they gave up D.J. Moore, a wide receiver who’s still playing well with the Bears. They’ve had some good players here. I say they don’t have any star power. DJ Moore wasn’t like a superstar. Christian McCaffrey was, and they traded him several years ago. That was the face of the franchise for a while. 



“If Bryce had Christian McCaffrey in the backfield, it would look a lot different for sure. But yeah, they’re not quite ready to go completely south on Bryce. But I’d say they have two home games coming up, Dolphins and then Cowboys, and if they lose both of those like that last game, I mean, I think there’ll be some changes going on here,” he said.



The Panthers rank third in the NFC South division, only ahead of the New Orleans Saints. They have an intriguing team, but they have failed to deliver so far. Young’s days with the franchise could be numbered if he doesn’t improve.&nbsp;

Young’s performances haven’t been terrible, but the lack of success has played against him, and now his future with the Panthers might be up in the air. After revitalizing his career in 2024, even after he was benched for Andy Dalton, Young started the season with renewed expectations.&nbsp;



So far in four games, he has completed 87 of 144 pass attempts for 753 yards and five touchdowns. Young has been intercepted three times and sacked six times.&nbsp;While these numbers aren’t necessarily terrible, the Panthers’ record is a source of concern among fans and analysts and some think we might be seeing the last of Young in Carolina.&nbsp;

Jeff Howe of The Athletic wrote on Tuesday that Young overcame big roadblocks during his still-young NFL career. He ranked 18th among all qualified QBs in expected points per dropback (0.07), behind some of the best quarterbacks in the league last season, Jayden Daniels (0.09) and Sam Darnold (0.08).&nbsp;

This season, however, he ranks 30th, only ahead of rookie Cam Ward, 41-year-old veteran Joe Flacco, and Bengals backup Jake Browning.&nbsp;



“At this point, the Panthers would be all but declaring their intentions to split with Young if they benched him again,” Howe wrote. “If it does reach that point, it’s also likely the Panthers would be barreling toward their eighth consecutive season with a losing record. And since owner David Tepper bought the team in 2018, he’s never employed a head coach for three full seasons, which effectively puts Canales on the clock. This, of course, is the type of turnover that keeps organizations in constant peril. It may also lead to the breaking point that opens the door for Young to find a fresh start with another team.”



The Panthers could put an end to this partnership soon, as Young has yet to reach the level the team expected from him when they drafted him with the No. 1 overall pick.&nbsp;

“After his solid stretch run last year, it looked like the lightbulb might be coming on for the first overall pick in 2023,” Davenport wrote. “But for every good play he’s made in 2025, there have seemingly been two bad ones—the kind that cost teams games. At this rate, Carolina will be using a top-five pick on a quarterback in 2026.”



Young’s career has been a rollercoaster so far. He went from disappointing everybody in 2023 to being benched for Andy Dalton in 2024 to then winning his starting role again down the road. Many thought coach Dave Canales could bring a spark to his career, but Young has looked good, not great, so far.&nbsp;

To do so, they brought Rico Dowdle and drafted Trevor Etienne in the fourth round of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFL</a> Draft. We could see Hubbard being the primary running option on the team, but share some of his snaps, at least early on in the season.



<h2>Is Hubbard the best of the bunch?</h2>



The Panthers have brought many people to compete with Chubba Hubbard in the backfield. Yet, he always delivers. First it was Jonathon Brooks, whose injury history has seen him fall off the ranks. He will miss the whole 2025 season. Now, there are two new faces. Dowdle is fresh off a 1,000-yard season with the Cowboys but Carolina only gave him a one year deal worth $3 million. As for Etienne, he is a fourth round pick who’s listed third on the RB depth chart.

Chubba Hubbard played 15 games last season and racked up 1195 yards and a staggering 10 touchdowns. Another thing worth noting with Hubbard was the fact that his volume never decreased despite the Panthers being a team that was trailing most of the time. He was the one constant threat on an offense who was still trying to decide between Andy Dalton and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/bryce-young" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bryce Young</a>.

<h2>Hubbard will still be productive</h2>



Even if his snaps decrease a bit, Hubbard is Carolina’s best back. Hubbard averaged 4.8 yards per rushing attempt. That is better than Dowdle’s, for example. As for Etienne, he was a good running back in college, but nothing stellar.



Hubbard will likely get 70% of the snaps and especially near the end zone. For Fantasy or betting purposes, his stock shouldn’t drop that much. He will be very productive and is a reliable player who doesn’t miss much time.
