You can’t talk about <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketbal</a>l without talking about the Duke Blue Devils. As such, even non-hoops fans may have heard about <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cooper Flagg</a> by now.



The Maine product has been spectacular in his first — and most likely only — season in Durham. So far, he’s averaged 19.9 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.



That’s why coach Jon Scheyer couldn’t stand to watch him being so passive in the win against NC State. He finished the first half with just five points, so his coach pulled him aside and gave him some tough love.

Clearly, his coach’s harsh and brutally honest words had a big effect on him. He took over the game with 23 second-half points, adding five rebounds, two assists, and a huge block.

That’s why, more often than not, they’ve had some of the best players in the nation. They’re a blue-collar program with a plethora of NBA players in their history books.



With that in mind, the legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski shared his thoughts on the hype surrounding their two latest superstars: Zion Williamson and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cooper Flagg.</a>

Unfortunately, Williamson hasn’t been able to find that same success in the league. While spectacular when he plays, he’s been hurt more often than not so far.

There have also been some major concerns about his work ethic, eating habits, and overall feel for the game. Hopefully, that won’t be the case with Flagg, who has everything to be a star.

The Commissioner then talked about the importance of getting more American talents to the league and getting to work closely with national player development programs:

At the end of the day, there’s never any kind of certainty when it comes to the NBA Draft. But, from a potential standpoint, Flagg does have everything one would look for in a franchise player.

Fast forward to today, and there are even more reasons to jump on board the bandwagon. He’s not going to be on campus for much longer, but he’s definitely making the most of his time there.



The future <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA </a>star has been one of the most versatile and well-rounded players in the nation this season. In fact, he could break a 25-year record mark in the ACC.



<h2>Cooper Flagg is leading Duke in five major categories</h2>



As pointed out by Steve Wiseman of The News &amp; Observer, Flagg is the first player in the past 25 years to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks per game:

As of now, the 6-foot-9 small forward is averaging 19.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.2 blocks per contest for Jon Scheyer’s team, and that kind of versatility and ability to fill up the stat sheet will make him the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.

The Duke Blue Devils are just like every other white-collar college basketball program. You either love them or you hate them; there’s simply no in-between at this point.



What no one can deny, however, is that they’re always expected to compete for the ultimate prize. And now that they have <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cooper Flagg</a>, that has only become more evident.



They’ve fared quite well so far, going 15-2 overall and 7-0 in the ACC. Nonetheless, Jay Jack still doesn’t see them being ready to win the whole thing this season. 



<h2>Jack Jay doesn’t think Duke will win the title</h2>



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote">“I think only time can tell, I would be willing to say they’ll be in final four.” Jay said on ‘To The Baha.’ “They just have so much talent, they’ve got a big (at every single position), they’ve got Cooper, they’ve got point guard play, they’ve got shooters.”</blockquote>

Jay did admit that the Blue Devils are as talented as any team can hope to be. Nevertheless, they’re also very young, and he knows they’ll be under a lot of pressure:



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote">“They have got everything you need to make a long run, time will tell with the freshmen when it comes to the tournament, like how they really deal with that talent-wise, there’s not many teams as talent as this Duke team,” he continued.</blockquote>

His 42 points against Notre Dame marked a new record for any ACC player.



Nonetheless, it didn’t come without a price. He went to the line 17 times, knocking down 16 free throws. He didn’t shy away from contact, but the Fighting Irish kept being overly physical with him.



That’s why coach Jon Scheyer lost his temper. The officials called Flagg for an offensive foul for seemingly pushing off on a drive. He had clearly been held first, so Scheyer emphatically went after the officials, being called for a technical foul. Even so, he has no regrets. 



<h2>Jon Scheyer won’t stop defending Cooper Flagg</h2>



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote">“People are going to do things to try to make it easier to guard him,” Scheyer said. “And grabbing and holding is going to be something that’s there. So it wasn’t just one play isolated for me. It’s just understanding that he does get hit.”</blockquote>

Scheyer doubled down on his determination to defend Flagg when he’s getting hit. Then again, he also made it loud and clear that he had no ill feelings towards the referees:

The Duke star has already written his name in history books. His 42-performance helped the Blue Devils take down the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a close, 86-78 game.



Not only was this a career-best for the projected first-overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft, but it also was the highest single-game scoring performance in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) history. However, he wasn’t even aware of what he had done.

Flagg put together a tent and camped at the free-throw line all game long. He went 16-of-17 from the charity stripe, and he headlined the importance of drawing contact:



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote">“It’s a huge part of the game if you’re able to get in the paint and get fouled,” Flagg said, “so I was kind of able to get that going early and was kind of able to live in the paint tonight.”</blockquote>

For years, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg">Cooper Flagg</a> has been deemed the best prospect in his NBA Draft class. He’s been at Duke for this season, and he’s been the most talked-about player in all of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a>.



Of course, some argue that Dylan Harper or Ace Bailey have already piled up enough merits to take him down as the first-overall pick. Most insiders, however, still have him atop their rankings.



Notably, that includes ESPN expert Seth Greenberg. Talking on SportsCenter, the renowned analyst explained what sets Cooper Flagg apart from other players with ‘flashier’ games.

Of course, that sounds simple, but sometimes, the game of basketball is simple. Not all players focus on doing a little bit of everything, especially in today’s offensive-driven game.

Flagg, unlike most modern players, takes pride in playing both ends of the floor. Hence, some have compared him with another big forward with 3-and-D expertise, like Andrei Kirilenko.



However, as impressive as his defense has been, his offense hasn’t fallen much behind. According to Koby Del Rosario of Sportskeeda, with his 17.5 points per game, Flagg is on pace to match or surpass Kyrie Irving and Brandon Ingram’s scoring average at Duke.

Of course, he’s still far behind other former Blue Devils stars, such as Zion Williamson or Marvin Bagley, who eclipsed the 20-point mark during their days at Durham.

That’s not what you’d expect to hear after beating a team by nearly 30 points. Even so, Pittsburgh has been inching closer and closer to the Top 25 over the past couple of weeks.

However, even the most calm player can get emotional at times. That was the case with Flagg when he was called for a foul early in the second half of the win vs. Pittsburgh.



Flagg was visibly upset with himself after the call. That’s why, shortly after, he took it on the rim by completing a one-man fastbreak after a steal for one of the most incredible dunks of the season. Following the game, coach Jon Scheyer talked about his pupil’s character.

He’s just so competitive, and he just brings out a lot of good stuff from his teammates.”</blockquote>

The coach continued to praise his young star for his play. Admittedly, that dunk was one of the highlights of the season, and he knows the energy was contagious:

Jon Scheyer’s team was always in control of the game. Nevertheless, Flagg was frustrated with his play after being called for an avoidable foul to start the second half.



Shortly after, he got a steal near the baseline, took the ball down the court, took off at the top of the key, and had one of the most impressive dunks we’ve seen in quite a while. When asked about it, he admitted that he was angry at himself.

Even though everybody was in awe after the emphatic dunk, Flagg wasn’t fazed. When asked to give it a score, the young forward stated that he would rate it an 8.5:

The Duke Blue Devils needed <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cooper Flagg </a>on Tuesday, but it seemed like he was going to sit for a while. He got into foul trouble with two quick fouls in the win vs. Virginia Tech.



Flagg was called for his second foul with 12:50 minutes left to play in the first half. Needless to say, coach Jon Scheyer was far from pleased with that, but he still trusted him to stay on the floor.



He ended up paying him back by scoring 24 points on 9-of-14 from the floor and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. Eventually, the Blue Devils won 88-65, taking their record to 11-2 (3-0 in the ACC). Even so, Scheyer didn’t let him off the hook.

Unless something crazy (is going to happen), he’s gonna play,” Scheyer said of the star forward. “I was pissed at him for getting the second foul. Even so, the third-year coach also tipped his hat to his great player, especially since he continued to play strong defense even after being called for his second foul:
