“If we got to 18 and 2, that’s not an unreasonable thing,” Goodell said. “The other thing it does, [Super Bowl Sunday] ends on up Presidents’ Day weekend, which is a three-day weekend, which makes it Sunday night and then you have Monday off.“

“Yeah, that would be something. I just asked if anybody has won three times and they told me no. So, I said ‘alright’. We’ll see. It was supposed to be the perfect opportunity to end Andy Reid’s dynasty and then go on the road to beat the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game. 



None of that happened as Mahomes, the successor of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/tom-brady">Tom Brady</a> in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a>, got a historic 27-24 victory helped by a tremendous defense with names such as Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed.



Now, the Bills have to face massive challenges due to the salary cap. As a consequence, many key players were released. For example, safety Jordan Poyer, cornerback Tre’Davious White and center Mitch Morse. Furthermore, wide receiver Gabe Davis signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars after becoming an unrestricted free agent.

In 2023, Justin Madubuike was sensational recording 13 sacks. Furthermore, in an NFL record, the defensive tackle got at least a half-sack in 11 consecutive games.

“It’s kind of hard, because basically our job is football, so it’s just like, ‘All right, let’s use this as motivation where you get back in the lab just to put yourself in a position and try to do your best to get back,’” Samuel said on Up &amp; Adams, via Pro Football Talk. “People just say there’s always next year, but I heard that in 2019 and it took four more years to get where we’re at.“



This Niners team already knows what is like to fight to get back to the big game, as it took four seasons and multiple changes at quarterback to contend again. Therefore, Samuel is worried about how long it could take for San Francisco to have another shot at the championship.



“It’s not that easy as people think to get to the Super Bowl,” Samuel said. “It takes everything. It takes me, the coaches, the people upstairs, you bring people in to help. For everything to play out right, you’re not just gonna snap your hands and be back in the Super Bowl again.”

<h2>Niners not making many changes in 2024</h2>

However, the franchise will make a few changes at key areas of the team. But far from making them want to avoid anything related to the Chiefs, it looks like the Niners set their sights on some of their members. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, San Francisco wanted Steve Spagnuolo to be its next defensive coordinator.



“On the coaching side, which there is no cap, right? Steve Spagnuolo signs a couple of days after,” said Russini on a recent episode of The Athletic Football Show podcast, via Chiefs Wire. “San Francisco was flirting with him and bringing him in as DC (Defensive Coordinator).”



Spagnuolo has been serving as the Chiefs DC since 2019, playing a pivotal role in the franchise’s three championships in five years. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/49ers-kyle-shanahan-sheds-light-on-decision-to-fire-steve-wilks-after-super-bowl-loss-20240215-BUS-104982.html">Firing Steve Wilks</a> was one of the Niners’ first decisions after Super Bowl LVIII, and it seems that they looked on the winning side to fill in the vacancy.

However, Spagnuolo got tied to a contract extension just in time to fend off interest from other teams. <h2>Steve Spagnuolo admits he would like to be a HC</h2>



Spagnuolo’s contribution to the Chiefs’ success makes many wonder why he hasn’t moved on to a head coaching role yet. Many think he’s just comfortable that way, but even Spagnuolo himself admitted he would like to be a head coach again. 



“Absolutely would want to,” Spagnuolo said on Mad Dog Sports Radio, via Pro Football Talk. “We’re prideful guys in this business. … The answer to the question is yes, but I always follow up with this. If it never happens and it’s God’s will that I continue to do what I’m doing, I’m a blessed man.”



Spagnuolo embarked on head coaching in 2009 after doing a great work as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, but things didn’t go to plan as he went 10-38 in three seasons with the St. Louis Rams. He later had another experience as head coach with the Giants in 2017 but on an interim basis. While the idea of having another chance as HC is on his mind, Spagnuolo is happy with his role in Kansas City.

Despite the defeat, the franchise is glad to move forward with him as their starting quarterback.



Speaking to reporters at the scouting combine this week, Niners general manager John Lynch made it clear the 49ers feel relieved they’ve found a reliable signal-caller in Purdy, who was the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.



“It’s a nice feeling, I know that — having stability at that position,” Lynch said, via Pro Football Talk. “People forget last year was Brock’s first full year as a starter. So I think that leaves you feeling pretty good about his opportunity with what we’ve already seen in his couple of years.“



Purdy exceeded expectations in his rookie year, proving to be up to the task when the Niners had to lean on him. With both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo out with season-ending injuries, the Iowa State product stepped up and lead the team to the NFC Championship, where a shoulder surgery forced him off the field.

He won the job for the following year and made it all the way to the big game, falling just short in Las Vegas. Either way, Lynch emphasized on the fact that Purdy is just getting started.

<h2>49ers happy to build on Purdy’s fast rise</h2>



“In particular, last year, the first full year as a starter coming off the injury, we’re past that. It just gives you a lot of confidence going in. Now, it’s like kind of building around him,” Lynch added. “It gives you a foundation to build off of and that is a really good feeling, a settling feeling.”



Purdy delivered a solid performance in the 2024 Super Bowl. Even though he couldn’t lead the Niners to victory, the second-year quarterback didn’t make costly mistakes, ending the match with zero turnovers.

The 24-year-old completed 23 of his 38 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown, but he was just unlucky to have <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a> on the other side. Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt could be on his way out of Arrowhead, but the curious thing is he might end up in the Bay area. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the 52-year-old is interviewing for the Niners’ defensive coordinator opening.



“The 49ers are interviewing Chiefs defensive backs coach David Merritt for their defensive coordinator position, sources say,” Garafolo wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Merritt, a longtime trusted assistant for Steve Spagnuolo, helped coach up KC’s fourth-ranked pass defense this season.”



The news made noise given how recently the Chiefs beat the 49ers in the big game, but it reflects how fast everyone in the league can move on. The new season won’t start until September, but teams are already making decisions with Week 1 of 2024 in mind.

Merritt, who’s served in Kansas City since 2019, has been a pivotal member behind the Chiefs’ defense that helped win the championship last year. However, the team could lose even more important pieces from the unit.

At 29, Jones is seeking one of the biggest contracts for a defensive player after proving his worth during his time in Kansas City. As for Sneed, the team placed the franchise tag on him but also gave him permission to seek a trade, according to reports.



Keeping both of them is the priority for this offseason, but the list of Chiefs free agents in 2024 is even longer, with the likes of Drue Tranquill, Mike Edwards, and Donovan Smith also in that group.

But far from making it all about itself, the winning side took time to recognize its opponent.



Chiefs’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, for instance, revealed he texted <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy">Brock Purdy</a> after the game at Allegiant Stadium. In his opinion, the Niners quarterback deserved praise for his performance.



“I’ll be honest with you. I just texted Brock (Purdy) the other day,” Spagnuolo said Spagnuolo said in a recent episode of The Season with Peter Schrager podcast, as quoted by ChiefsWire.. “I tried to track down his number. I just wanted to tell him how much respect I have for him.“



While Purdy couldn’t lead San Francisco to victory, he wasn’t to blame for the team’s loss. The second-year quarterback completed 23 of his 38 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown before <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a> won the game for the Chiefs with a 75-yard drive in overtime.

“What a terrific game he played. He’s such a quality guy, a strong Christian man, and I respect him. I think Brock Purdy… is terrific. I didn’t find many (holes in his game),” Spagnuolo added.

<h2>Brock Purdy’s fantastic path with storybook end pending</h2>



Purdy’s story is quite incredible. After being selected with the last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Iowa State University product proved his ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ tag wrong by winning the 49ers’ starting job against all odds.



The Arizona native was given the reins halfway through his rookie year, with both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo suffering season-ending injuries. Far from struggling to settle in, Purdy led the Niners to the NFC Championship Game, where he had to leave the field due to a shoulder injury.



Purdy then proved he was no one-season wonder, as he once again took the 49ers to a deep postseason run, this time making it all the way to the Super Bowl. His Cinderella Story didn’t have a storybook ending this time, but at 24, he still has plenty of time to keep on trying.

However, the head coach is confident his team will go the distance at some point.



“It’s not a matter of if. It’s just a matter of when,” McDermott said about the Bills’ chances of finally winning a Super Bowl, via The Athletic. “That is the relentless pursuit. I believe we’re doing things the right way.“



McDermott has turned Buffalo around, as the franchise only had two winning seasons this century before his arrival in 2017. With him in charge, Buffalo went on to post six winning seasons in seven years.



The Bills have been one of the most consistent teams in the NFL in the last few years, winning four consecutive division titles while making the playoffs in the last five seasons. The lack of playoff success remains a stain in McDermott’s tenure at Highmark Stadium though, as the Bills couldn’t make it past the AFC Championship Game under his tutelage. But the coach claims the championship will eventually come.

“You only fail if you quit, and I’ve never done that. I’ve never been about that,” McDermott added. “Whatever it is, you always figure it out. You always find a way to get there. The only thing left to do for us at this point is win an AFC Championship and win a Super Bowl.”

<h2>Bills craving for Super Bowl return </h2>



The Bills have one of the greatest dual-threat quarterbacks in the entire league in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/josh-allen">Josh Allen</a>, surrounded by a group of star players in offense and a defense that knows how to win games.



The contender tag has been around them for a while now, but they’ve failed to live up to it with a deep postseason run. The closest the team got to the big game was in 2021, when it lost to Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs in heartbreaking fashion in the AFC Championship Game.



Buffalo seemed to continue having all the pieces to succeed in the following years, but they lost in the Divisional Round in each of the last three playoffs. The franchise already has a complicated history with the Super Bowl, having infamously lost in the big game in four consecutive appearances between 1991-1994.



With the team struggling to get to the title game more than three decades later while Kansas City continues to dominate, many believe the championship window is closing for the Bills. But McDermott disagrees. Only time will show who is right about this.

But they might need to do so sooner rather than later, as they could lose those who helped them go back-to-back.



Mecole Hardman, for instance, is once again heading into the open market. The wide receiver caught <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a>‘ pass to score the game-winning touchdown against the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-francisco-49ers">San Francisco 49ers</a>, yet he doesn’t know whether the Chiefs want him back next season.



“Right now you’re just hearing talk and seeing what’s going on, people’s ideas,” Hardman told NFL Network’s Andrew Siciliano. “And you’ll probably get a better idea as the week goes on. But whenever free agency starts, you’ll know. But we’ll see if they want me back. If not, might be somewhere else. So, we’ll see.”



Hardman ended up making the most important catch of the season in the big game at Allegiant Stadium, which was curious given how little playing time he had throughout the campaign.

<h2>Hardman’s return to Chiefs pays off</h2>



The wideout started the season with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-jets">New York Jets</a>, where he had only one reception for six yards in five games before being traded back to Kansas City, where he had already played between 2019 and 2022.

Siciliano joked with the possibility that Hardman goes back to the Big Apple now that he’s entering the free agency again. But the 25-year-old made it clear there are no chances: “No. I won’t go back to the Jets.”



Hardman made six regular season appearances with the Chiefs, making 14 catches for 118 yards. His postseason numbers weren’t much better, with just five receptions for 62 yards. But that included the touchdown that decided the Super Bowl.

But former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel, who won two championships next to Brady at the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-england-patriots">New England Patriots</a>, believes Mahomes will never get to surpass his ex-teammate.



“My opinion is it is damn near impossible for Patrick Mahomes to dethrone Tom Brady as the number one GOAT,” Samuel said on Say What Needs to Be Said, via Sports Illustrated. “It is damn near impossible for Patrick Mahomes to dethrone Tom Brady’s number one GOAT status. Right? If you look at the body of work, not the accolades, because we all know accolades come from popularity and perception and perception driven.”



Mahomes already boasts three Super Bowl rings at just 28, which is why many believe he has plenty of time to get close to Brady’s record of seven championships. However, Samuel believes Mahomes needs to overtake Brady by at least three rings to be considered the GOAT.

“So we know that Brady has seven Super Bowl victories, six with one organization and one during a pandemic, defeating Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. How are you going to beat that? <h2>Mahomes says he’s not even close to catching Brady</h2>



Mahomes’ success made the GOAT debate an interesting topic in the NFL, as his rise comes just after the end of Brady’s supremacy. But one strong argument for those who defend Tom’s status as the No. 1 is the playoff record between them.



Brady got the upper hand both times he faced Mahomes in the postseason, first with the Patriots’ win over the Chiefs in the 2019 AFC Championship Game. But the next one was more significant, as Brady led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to victory against Mahomes’ Chiefs in Super Bowl LV. Mahomes doesn’t dare to compare himself with Brady yet, especially for that loss in the big game in 2021.

“First off, let’s say this. Brock Purdy did not have a bad game,” Newton said on his ‘4th and 1’ podcast, via SB Nation. “To that point, field goal versus touchdown, that’s not Brock Purdy. Why the f— did they receive the ball first? It was Tony Romo who mentioned this — when you know what you have to get, now you have four downs to get it, not three.”



Newton was talking about the 49ers’ controversial decision to receive the ball in overtime instead of kicking it. San Francisco ended up settling for a field goal in a fourth down situation, letting the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Chiefs</a> play their possession knowing how many points they needed to win the game. “The 49ers, they were just trying to get points,” Newton said. “And that is not Brock Purdy’s fault, that’s bad coaching. There was too many people who was exposed. They didn’t know the real rules of overtime.”



Shanahan has been questioned for opting to take the ball, and it only got worse when 49ers players admitted not knowing the new overtime rules. Newton once controversially labeled Purdy as a ‘game manager’, but now says the second-year QB did nothing wrong in the big game.

“We’re not understanding how serious this is. The fact that they weren’t addressed to what the rules were, that’s Steve Wilks, that’s Shanahan, that’s John Lynch, that’s the 49ers organization, and that’s not Brock Purdy’s fault,” Newton added about Purdy, who completed 23 of 38 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown. “He played good enough for his team to win. He made plays and he made plays in times of need as well.”

<h2>Kyle Shanahan wanted chance to win in sudden death scenario</h2>



Now that the 49ers lost, it’s easy to blame Shanahan. But the 49ers head coach <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/kyle-shanahan-explains-why-he-took-the-ball-in-super-bowl-overtime-against-chiefs-20240215-BUS-105160.html">defended his decision</a> to receive first, explaining he wanted San Francisco to have possession in case the game was still tied after both teams had the ball.



In that scenario, the 49ers would have had the chance to win the game with the third possession. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a> later revealed the Chiefs would have tried to win the game before San Francisco could get the ball back, though.



Either way, the Niners lost because they failed to get the job done both in offense and defense. With the ball, they only got to score three points. Without it, they were unable to stop Mahomes, who orchestrated a 75-yard drive to win the game and break the Niners’ hearts in Las Vegas.

And it looks like we may never get to hear the audio of that moment. According to the New York Post, the Chiefs may have stopped NFL Films from airing the audio at Reid’s request:

<h2>Reid, Kelce downplay the incident</h2>



While Kelce’s outburst gave plenty to talk about in the week after Super Bowl LVIII, it didn’t seem to be such a big deal for him or Reid. The Chiefs head coach downplayed his player’s moment of rage, making it clear he had no hard feelings about it. In fact, Reid said Kelce was only saying he wanted to be on the field.



“He caught me off balance,” Reid said, via ESPN. “I wasn’t watching. He was really coming over [and saying], ‘Just put me in, I’ll score. I’ll score.’ So, that’s really what it was. I love that. It’s not the first time. I appreciate him.“

Kelce also addressed his outburst a couple of times after the Super Bowl, first with the media and then in his ‘New Heights’ podcast <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/jason-kelce-lets-travis-know-what-he-thinks-about-sideline-moment-with-andy-reid-20240214-BUS-104872.html">with brother Jason</a>. The 34-year-old regretted his actions, explaining how much he loves and respects the longtime Chiefs coach.



“It’s definitely unacceptable and I immediately wish I would have took it back,” Kelce said. “Unfortunately sometimes my passion comes out where it looks like it’s negativity but I’m grateful that he knows that it’s all because I want to I want to win this thing with him more than anything.”
