The Deshaun Watson saga continues in the NFL and after the player officially requested a trade from the Houston Texans, everybody is predicting where heâll play next and for what, as not every team will make the same offer for the player.
The quarterback has been linked with a series of teams in recent days and after it was revealed that âover half of the leagueâ called the Texans to inquire about Jackson, things are getting more confused for the young star and his team.
One of those teams was the New York Jets, who have been linked with various quarterbacks in recent weeks and Watson is one of those. However, not everybody is sold on the idea that Deshaun is what the team needs right now.
Todd McShay says Deshaun Watson wonât bring a huge upgrade to the Jets
Todd McShay, an NFL analyst for ESPN, recently claimed that the Jets were better off with Sam Darnold instead of trading for Deshaun Watson, as the latter would only be a âslightâ upgrade for the New Yorkers.
âTo me, it just doesnât make sense. I donât think youâre getting a huge upgrade,â McShay said last week on the networkâs âFirst Draftâ podcast. âIf Iâm the Jets sitting at No. 2, Iâm saying, you know what? I love Deshaun. Heâs a really good player. I might even think heâs slightly better than Sam. But if Samâs content and Sam wants to help us build this thing, we have picks two and 23 in the first round this year; 34, 66 and 87. So, five picks in the first 87. That should be at least four starters that youâre getting right there and two really impact starters with that second and 23rd overall pick.
âAnd then, by the way, we have two first-rounders next year, a first-rounder in the second and a first-rounder in the third. So, youâre talking about four first-rounders, two second-rounders and three third-rounders. Count those up. I mean, youâre building half of a roster right there in the next two drafts.â
McShay agreed that Darnold still makes rookie mistakes but he can improve his game. Watson had an impressive season in 2020 despite having a poor team that didnât help him succeed in the AFC.
He is way better than Sam Darnold and could do more than him with the O-line the Jets have right now. The Jets are reportedly sticking with Darnold and will do as exactly as McShay said but this must be one of the worst takes in NFL history.
They need a player like Watson that will lift their level. They are making big moves this offseason and trading for Deshaun would be the cherry on the top for the Gang Green, who are needy of results.
