The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/golden-state-warriors" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Golden State Warriors</a> have a big problem right now. They’re at a serious risk of missing the playoffs, and they’re no longer the<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> NBA</a> championship-caliber team they once were.



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/stephen-curry" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stephen Curry</a> is still a superstar, but he cannot do all the heavy lifting on his own. The Warriors’ supporting cast has been lacking, and GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. was unable or unwilling to improve the roster midseason.



The biggest issue with him is that their salary cap situation won’t get much better in the foreseeable future. That’s why they will have a tough time finding reinforcements in the off-season.



<h2>The Warriors Need Jonathan Kuminga</h2>



With that in mind, Warriors beat writer Marcus Thompson II showed his concerns about the future of the dynasty. They’re not in a good spot, draft-wise, and money will also be tight:



“The question now, perhaps best asked in all caps, is how will they get a No. 2? They don’t have high enough picks to draft such a talent,” wrote Thompson. “They likely won’t even have their 2024 first-round pick (due to their 2019 trade with the Grizzlies to take Andre Iguodala’s contract). They don’t have the salary cap space to sign that player. And they probably wasted their best trade-deadline chip (Chris Paul’s expiring $30 million salary) to get one.”

As things stand now, Jonathan Kuminga might be the Warriors’ only hope. He has shown glimpses of greatness, but they need him to be that consistent No. 2 option besides Steph:



“If there is any salvation in the torturous inconsistency of the Warriors’ season, it’s Kuminga’s development and the unearthed possibility of him being the future co-bearer of their offense,” Thompson added. “Kuminga might be the best option down the road. But even with his potential, it’s going to take a leap to get him ready for that role.”

That’s why it was hard to believe that Steve Kerr would send <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/stephen-curry" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stephen Curry</a> to the bench for most of the fourth quarter in a close game with the Minnesota Timberwolves.



Curry was red-hot during the first three quarters of the game before Kerr benched him for over ten minutes. The Warriors wound up losing the game, and the fans roasted the coach on social media.

However, when asked about this somewhat controversial decision, Coach Kerr was unbothered. He claimed that he trusted the other guys to get the job done, adding that they could not expect Curry to bail them out night in and night out:

“We’ve got Chris Paul out there,” Kerr said after the loss. “We’ve got Klay (Thompson). We’ve got Draymond (Green). We’ve got great players out there. We can’t expect to just ride Steph game after game after game.”



The coach added that Curry may not be able to withstand the physical burden of playing heavy minutes every night at this point in his career. He’s averaged just shy of 33 minutes a night this season:



“These last few weeks have been really tough on him. We’ve put the burden of this franchise on his shoulders for… 15 years? We can’t expect him to play 35 minutes,” Kerr continued. “We’ve got five games in seven days on this road trip. If you want to say that him playing 30 minutes instead of 32 was the difference between the win and the loss, I totally disagree with that. We’re trying to win the game. We’re trying to keep them fresh, too.”

“I think about it all the time. Eventually, you’ll get to a point where you wake up and whatever your body is telling you, or if your mind is telling you it’s time.&nbsp;But, I don’t think I’m anywhere close to that.”

Their woes without Curry were on full display in their latest loss to the undermanned San Antonio Spurs. Fortunately, they were able to get back at them and bounced back with a much-needed road win.



Nonetheless, it seems like the Warriors will need to keep this up without Curry, as coach Steve Kerr already ruled him out from their upcoming matchup with Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks.

With Steph out, it changes things dramatically for us in terms of what he provides, not only with his shooting but the spacing and the gravity. They did a good job of just staying in front of us. I didn’t think we moved the ball particularly well.”



<h2>The Young Guys Must Step Up For The Warriors</h2>



Kerr also stated that Curry’s absence forced his hand to open up the rotation and give the young players more minutes, which is something he hasn’t done very often:



“We’re playing a lot of young guys,” Kerr said. “This is all part of it. You have to go through multiple seasons to really understand the different games that are going to happen, the styles, the different emotional swings. All of that has to be experienced by young guys in order to develop and grow and learn how to win.”

<h2>How long will Stephen Curry be out with Warriors?</h2>



According to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski, there’s good news for the Golden State Warriors. Stephen Curry does not have any structural damage to his right ankle, so he may not be out for an extended period.







The Warriors are currently in the tenth place in the Western Conference with a record of 33-29, holding a 5.5-game lead over the Houston Rockets, who are in the last play-in spot. Therefore, Curry’s absence could tighten things up for them in the standings.

“We implemented our strategy like 15 minutes before we left the locker room,” Green said. “So I don’t necessarily think we put together a full defensive strategy. I thought it was fun to try. Now, things might not be that clear for him and his future in the Bay area. Apparently, his impending free agency and how things have gone this season have estrangled his relationship with Lacob:



“It’s clear their relationship has suffered some strain along the way, with league sources indicating that Thompson has received no assurances from on high that his hopes of retiring happily in a Warriors jersey someday will be a shared priority this summer,” Amick reported. “Both sides, it seems clear, have no clarity about what might happen when that time rolls around.”

In a recent appearance on 7PM in Brooklyn, the Dubs big man addressed his team’s failed attempt to land LeBron from the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-lakers">Los Angeles Lakers</a> before the February trade deadline, explaining how getting James would have all but secured the title for the Bay area.



“The basketball I think that’s the easiest part,” Green said about how James would settle in next to <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/stephen-curry">Stephen Curry</a> and company. “Because you got a bunch of guys who know the game and ain’t in competition with the next guy. Very at peace with where they are. The number one thing would be to win. You also have a group of guys that know how to win… I think that teams win the championship, no problem.”



Needless to say, the idea of seeing James and Curry on the same team is threatening for the rest of the league. Let alone if that team also has the likes of Green and Jonathan Kuminga and Steve Kerr as head coach in a franchise with a great track record of success.

“I don’t think they win a championship. I don’t think so because guess what? If LeBron is going to Golden State, you gotta build another team,” Anthony said. “He outta there, Klay is gone, he can’t stay! It’s gonna be them two and Kuminga…”



While Melo may have raised many eyebrows, he has a fair point. If a James trade to Golden State makes one think of the Dubs as potential champions, is because of the mere possibility of seeing him and Curry together.

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/steve-kerr">Steve Kerr</a>‘s decision to bench Klay gave a lot to talk about given Thompson’s history with the franchise, but the player is not making a big deal about it. Right now, the Dubs’ starting five is Brandin Podziemski, Stephen Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Jonathan Kuminga, and Draymond Green.

Thompson delivered a 35-point performance in his first game coming off the bench against Utah Jazz before the All-Star break, with just three points in the first game after the break vs. the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-lakers">Los Angeles Lakers</a> and 13 points against the Charlotte Hornets on Friday.

<h2>Stephen Curry, Steve Kerr praise Klay Thompson</h2>



“Even the game — Was the LA game where he only had three points? — It was one of the better all-around floor games he’s had where he took what the defense gave him, took the shots he’s supposed to shoot, most of them didn’t go in but the way the game flows and where he gets his opportunities, he was always making the right play,” Curry said about Thompson Sunday. “Playing great defense on whoever his matchup was. Got us some rebounds, extra possessions that way. And then tonight, it’s kind of the opposite where he’s hot and giving us a huge lead and huge boost the first nine minutes he was out there.“



Thompson said he took inspiration from San Antonio Spurs legend Manu Ginobili to accept his new role, as the Argentine legend also had a team-first mentality to come off the bench without hesitation.



“It all comes from understanding no matter if it’s a starting role, bench role, whatever it is, he’s still Klay Thompson and he can come in and do exactly what he did tonight,” Curry added. “I know he wanted to shoot better in the second half but the more reps he gets and the more confidence he has to just go out there and play basketball and don’t let the narratives kind of consume him, that’s when he’s at his best.”

The Warriors have won three out of four games with Thompson leading the second unit, as Golden State finds itself 10th in the West with a 29-27 record. Kerr is looking for a string of good results in the final stretch of the season, and he appreciates Thompson’s commitment.

“His approach feels so much better than it was even a few weeks ago,” Kerr said. “This has been an emotional season for him. You guys know this. He’s been grappling with his mortality in some ways as an athlete. He knows how good he was six years ago and he’s had a hard time reconciling everything after the injuries. And the thing we keep trying to convince him of is that he’s still a hell of a player. 



“But he’s at his best when he’s not pressing and he’s not stressed out and worried about trying to be the guy he was six years ago. I think coming off the bench has maybe helped in that regard. I just notice he’s more relaxed. His approach, his leadership in the locker room, it feels different, and I think he’s starting to get more comfortable with the role but all the biggest picture stuff that has been bothering him.”

Thompson is playing on an expiring contract, and at 34, it’s uncertain what kind of deal the Warriors plan to offer him at the end of the season. His numbers suggest he’s no longer the player he was during the dynasty’s best years, but there’s still time for him to prove his worth.

This has been a complicated season for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/golden-state-warriors" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Golden State Warriors</a>. The team started off the season with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> championship aspirations, and they’re not even a lock to make the playoffs.



Notably, Steve Kerr was under heavy fire for his reluctance to switch up his rotations and give younger players a longer leash, especially with some of the veterans struggling so badly.



That’s no longer the case, which is why <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/draymond-green" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Draymond Green</a> stepped up to defend his coach, stating that as much as Jonathan Kuminga has taken a huge leap this season, he needed to put in some more work before being ready to contribute.

“I think [Kerr] gets a lot of criticism for, ‘Oh, he’s not playing young guys,’ ” Draymond told The Athletic. “But would JK [Jonathan Kuminga] have been as ready as he is now a year ago? I personally don’t think so. I think we all believed in what JK could become. But you almost do JK a disservice by not giving him credit [for] the work he put in to become the player that he’s become this year.”

Green also pointed out that the coach made the necessary adjustments and gave younger players more minutes when the team needed it, so it was unfair to call him out for that earlier in the season:



“I think Steve has caught a lot of unfair criticism about playing young guys when number one, you haven’t had to or needed to, but as soon as you’ve needed to, you’re doing it. And you’ve made that adjustment, and look at what it’s done for us this season,“ Green continued.

Good coaches can make mistakes, but it takes a great coach to own them and adjust. The Warriors still aren’t the same contending team they used to be, but they’re finally trending in the right direction.
