Despite this, the team remains in first place overall, and a Supporters Shield seems within reach. However, this would be a minor consolation for a team seeking their second major trophy in club history.



Martino was at a press conference where he was asked about the Leagues Cup and the type of team the Columbus Crew is. The Argentine coach offered high praise for Wilfried Nancy’s side.

The Crew actually have fringe national team players who have contributed significantly to the team, including Leagues Cup joint leading scorer, Uruguayan Diego Rossi. The former Peñarol player has scored 6 goals in the tournament and has been a major success since arriving in Columbus in the middle of last season. 



Darlington Nagbe (a Tata favorite), Cucho Hernández, Yevhen Cheberko, Patrick Schulte, and DeJuan Jones make up a roster that includes players who have been capped by their national teams.

Despite his setbacks in MLS, his familiarity with this group of young talent should make him a potential candidate.&nbsp;

David Wagner has experience managing teams in Germany and England, with his most notable achievement being with Huddersfield Town in 2019. Known for his 4-2-3-1 formation, Wagner has some familiarity with US Soccer, having been capped by the team. While this would be his biggest job yet, his CV does not strongly suggest he is a “winner.”

The Leagues Cup is supposed to be a mega event between <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mls" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MLS</a> sides and Liga MX, but someone should tell <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/liga-mx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Liga MX</a> that, as it’s been complete dominance by MLS over Liga MX in this year’s version of the Leagues Cup. 



In fact, currently only 5 Liga MX teams have advanced to the next round of the competition, where America is already waiting. 



On Thursday evening, Benat San Jose’s side <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/atlas" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Atlas</a> was defeated by Real Salt Lake 2-1, and the Spanish manager came away impressed by the MLS side.

After the match, San Jose stated, “In general, I don’t know” (when asked as to why Liga MX teams have struggled this tournament). “What I can say is MLS teams are at a top level. Real Salt Lake is an extraordinary team. They’re very good technically, physically, and tactically.”



Pundits in Mexico have looked down on the Leagues Cup, considering it a money grab for MLS and Liga MX. Others have gone so far as to say that the tournament is a complete waste of time.

In US soccer circles, many fans are upset that the Leagues Cup has taken preference over the US Open Cup. While MLS sides are doing “well” this season, the tournament is seen as a tainted representation of MLS’s standing in international competition, as MLS historically has struggled mightily in the Concacaf Champions League.
