<p>The situation didn’t go any further as the team then went to the locker room, but it was definitely a <strong>hostile environment for the visitors</strong>. Even so, Argentina managed to pull off another 1-0 win at the Maracana, just like in the 2021 Copa America final.</p>

<h2>A great result for Argentina</h2>



<p>Thanks to Nicolas Otamendi’s brilliant header, the reigning world champions kept Uruguay at bay in the standings as they <strong>lead the World Cup Qualifiers table with 15 points</strong>, two more than La Celeste.</p>



<p>Brazil, on the other hand, dropped to sixth place with seven points, having failed to win in their last four matches. The Qualifiers will <strong>resume in September 2024</strong>, as in June the Conmebol teams will take part in the Copa America.</p>

<p><em>“<strong>There is absolutely no place for violence in football, on or off the field</strong>. Such events, as seen during the FIFA World Cup Qualifier between Brazil and Argentina at Maracana stadium, have no place in our sport or society. Without exception, all players, fans, staff and officials have to be safe and secure to play and enjoy football, and <strong>I call on the relevant authorities to ensure that this is respected at all levels</strong></em>,” Infantino’s statement read.</p>

<h2>Conmebol’s statement</h2>



<p><strong>Conmebol</strong> also released a statement in regard to this situation that gave so much to talk about. The governing body in South American soccer reiterated its stance against violence and made it clear that any possible measures about the violence at the Maracana will be <strong>up to FIFA.</strong></p>



<p>“<em>CONMEBOL condemns all forms of violence and will always cooperate with actions aimed at banishing violence, racism, xenophobia and discrimination. In this sense, the South American Confederation has been working systematically in the eradication of this scourge that affects South American and world soccer; and is available to continue collaborating in any initiative that seeks to eradicate intolerance and violence in sport. Likewise, it also states that CONMEBOL is not the organizer of the World Cup qualifiers. The elaboration of the rules governing the qualifiers, as well as the decision to open an investigation and the application of possible sanctions, are the exclusive attributions of FIFA</em>.”</p>



<h2>Brazilian police attack Argentine fans after brawl</h2>



<p>Brazilian and Argentine fans started to fight in the stands during the national anthems, but the local police <strong>took it on the away supporters</strong> only. Argentine fans were hit with batons and some of them even ended in the hospital.</p>

<p>Argentine fans were apparently fighting with Brazilian supporters in the stands and the Brazilian police started to <strong>hit La Albiceleste fans with batons</strong>. The Argentine team immediately went to intervene, but the chaos wouldn’t stop.</p>

<p>An angry <strong>Lionel Messi</strong> was seen protesting for the treatment the away fans were getting at the Maracana stadium. As the problems went on, Messi <strong>led his team back to the tunnel</strong>, telling the referee they wouldn’t start the match.</p>



<p>The Argentine national team waited for the situation to calm down. The Brazilian squad stayed on the field, waiting for any further information by the authorities. Needless to say, this shameful situation has overshadowed what should have been an interesting sporting derby on the field.</p>

<p>With things looking better in the stands, Messi and company returned to the field to play the game. But of course, the game was marred by the brutal scenes on the stands.</p>



<h2>Another chaotic derby</h2>



<p>While this is without any doubt the most shameful situation in a long time, it’s not the first time a Brazil-Argentina game is surrounded by a mess. In fact, La Albiceleste’s last trip to Brazilian soil in 2021 was called off in the first half.</p>



<p>Only five minutes into the game, health authorities stormed into the field claiming that four Argentine players broke the Covid-19 protocol by entering the country. La Albiceleste went back to the locker room, and the match never resumed.</p>



<h2>A must-win game for both</h2>



<p>Though it’s hard to focus on the game or the tournament when so many horrible things took place in the same venue, the game started anyway so now we may finally move on to the implications of this game.</p>



<p>While the atmosphere is extremely heated, both sides already saw this match as a must-win before the violent episode. Brazil come from a shocking loss to Colombia, whereas Argentina were upset by Uruguay.</p>

<p>Fernando Diniz’s men have failed to pick up a win in their last three games, a negative streak that sees them fifth in the standings. Lionel Scaloni’s side, on the other hand, arrived on Matchday 6 atop the table with 12 points.</p>
