“Young quarterback comes into a new system. So you got the learning curve, but now starting to get the timing with the routes,” McCarthy said, via Gridiron Heroics. “[Trey Lance is] close to being a master of the system. He has a really high understanding. He’s communicating very well. He looks more and more comfortable. He just needs reps. I know I say that every time I talk about him. That’s quite the praise for the former first-round pick. While Lance couldn’t live up to the expectations in the Bay area, his age (24) and Prescott’s contract situation make him a candidate to take the reins in 2025. McCarthy’s recent comments make that scenario look even more realistic.

However, despite not having total confidence in Prescott with a new contract, executive vice president Stephen Jones assured that Dak can still lead them to win a <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/super-bowl">Super Bowl</a>. That’s a lot of mixed signals in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a>.



“Absolutely. I mean, I totally think Dak can lead us to a championship. He does everything the right way. He’s certainly the leader of this football team. As we’ve already mentioned, entering the final year of his contract, Dak Prescott won’t get an extension in the near future from Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys.


 

 


A few weeks ago, Ian Rapoport confirmed this information. “The Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott have a mutual understanding of his contract situation, sources say, with no offers from Dallas despite him being in a contract year. Owner Jerry Jones said, ‘We are where we are, locked and loaded for this year.’ No indication a deal is coming.”

In fact, in a previous statement from Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ front office blamed Dak Prescott and other stars for the lack of signings in free agency. 



“We spend max, max money year in and year out. All 32 can only spend the same amount of money over a five-year stretch. What comes with having a good roster, which we do, we’re also looking towards signing our own guys. It doesn’t mean it happens overnight. But when you’re wanting to sign players like Dak and Micah and CeeDee, then&nbsp;you have to hold money back&nbsp;if you want to have a realistic chance of signing those guys.”

“It just so happens that sometimes, you know, that old oblong football doesn’t bounce your way. And we’ve had some tough breaks and tough games there in the postseason. But, you know, we’ve won 12 games three years in a row. I think that’s right at the top in terms of what teams have done over a three-year period. And, you know, we’re hanging around the rim. We’ve just gotta go up there and grab it, to use a basketball term, and dunk it in. We’re hanging around the rim. We just gotta get the job done.”

Cowboys owner <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/nfl-news-cowboys-owner-jerry-jones-gets-real-on-dak-prescotts-future-in-dallas">Jerry Jones addressed Prescott’s future</a> last week, suggesting the organization still sees the Mississippi State product as its franchise quarterback. On Thursday, Dak addressed his contract situation.



“It’s still conversations,” Prescott said when asked if there was something new to tell about his contract talks with Dallas, via Patrik Walker of the team’s website. “I’m aware of everything [owner Jerry Jones] said and everything he said is dead-on — communication has been back-and-forth.” 



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/dak-prescott">Prescott</a>, who will turn 31 in July, could hit unrestricted free agency if the Cowboys don’t offer him a new deal before 2025. However, the star signal-caller has once again made it clear he would like to stay in Dallas.

“At the end of the day, I’ve talked about [how] this is where I want to be,” Prescott said, “but my focus is on helping my team. It’s as simple as that. I don’t get caught up in the talks. You guys know that it’s been years of it. I’m just focused on helping this team and being the best I can [be] and get better.”

<h2>What Jerry Jones said about Prescott’s situation</h2>



“We want Dak Prescott. That’s that,” Jones told the media days before the 2024 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a> Draft. “… We think that there’s room for growth. He is absolutely unsurpassed as what he is as an individual with his work ethic, what he brings with his leadership and everything about what you would think about as a quarterback. So he’s got that. He’s had a few hits, but everybody has that, too.”



The Cowboys owner explained the team has other contracts to take care of. With CeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons also entering the final years of their respective deals, the salary cap has been mentioned by <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jerry-jones">Jones</a> as a reason delaying the contract discussions with Prescott.



“This wouldn’t even be my response if we were in a different place relative to the cap,” Jones said. “… That’s our challenge and to make it work out. Dak as the quarterback Cowboys, I don’t even have a blink on that one.”

<h2>Prescott’s goals with the Cowboys in 2024</h2>



While his uncertain future obviously raises many question marks, Prescott can’t get ahead of himself as he still has a job to do this year. After failing to at least reach the Super Bowl in eight seasons, the 3x Pro Bowler revealed his goal for the upcoming season. 



“To continue to get better,” Prescott said. “We scratched the surface, in the sense of this was our first year with Mike calling the show [on offense]. [We] continued to improve all year long. All the great things we had last year, to take it into game plan earlier in the offseason for things that may come up during the season. It’s going to prepare us [better] in the details and prevent us from having to make adjustments late. Another year is going to be special.”
