Russia have produced countless great tennis players over the years, both men and women, including names like Maria Sharapova, Maria Kirilenko, Anastasia Myskina, and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.



From the same generation as Sharapova came Yaroslava Shvedova, born on September 12, 1987, in Moscow, back when the Soviet Union was still standing. Shvedova developed a passion for tennis at a young age, delivering strong performances on the national stage that paved the way for her professional career.



Like many Russian players, her preferred surface was hard courts, especially indoors. She made her WTA debut in 2005 and captured her only singles title in 2007, though her greatest success would later arrive in doubles.



<h2>A strong singles career</h2>



After about a year and a half adjusting to the tour, Shvedova captured her lone WTA singles title in February 2007. She claimed the trophy in Bangalore, India, defeating Italy’s Mara Santangelo 6-4, 6-4 in the final. While her biggest achievements would later come in doubles, she continued competing at a solid level in singles.

In 2015, she reached another singles final in Bogota, though she fell short against Brazil’s Teliana Pereira. Shvedova achieved a career-high singles ranking of No. 25 in 2012.

<h2>Success in doubles</h2>



Alongside her singles career, Shvedova built an outstanding résumé in doubles. She captured 13 WTA titles in the discipline and climbed as high as World No. 3 in 2016. Her biggest triumphs came in 2010, when she partnered with American Vania King to win both <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/wimbledon">Wimbledon</a> and the US Open. In addition to her two Grand Slam titles, Shvedova also reached three other major finals, cementing her status as one of the top doubles players of her generation.



<h2>The match that made history</h2>



One of Shvedova’s most remarkable achievements came at Wimbledon in 2012, when she produced one of the rarest feats in tennis — a “Golden Set”. Facing Italy’s Sara Errani in the third round, the Kazakhstani won the opening set 6–0 without dropping a single point.



The flawless set lasted just 15 minutes and consisted of 24 consecutive points won by Shvedova. She went on to close out the match 6–0, 6–4, before falling in the next round to Serena Williams in three sets.

<h2>Four years without a win</h2>



By 2017, Shvedova’s career had begun to decline, marked by injuries, time away from the tour, and the challenges of balancing tennis with motherhood after giving birth to twins. The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated her attempts to make a full return.



Her perseverance finally paid off at the 2021 WTA 1000 event in Rome. In the first round, she rallied past Martina Trevisan 0–6, 7–6, 7–6 to end a four-year drought without a main-draw victory on the WTA Tour. Just months later, in October of that same year, Shvedova announced her retirement, closing the book on a long and accomplished career.

After retiring, Shvedova remained involved in the sport. From 2022 to 2023, she served as captain of Kazakhstan’s Billie Jean King Cup team, the premier women’s international competition. In that role, she guided top players such as Elena Rybakina and Yulia Putintseva.

Kevin Anderson’s story is one of grit, perseverance, and resilience. Towering at nearly 6-foot-8, armed with one of the most feared serves of his generation, and driven by an unshakable mindset, the South African rose to the top 5 in the ATP rankings, contested unforgettable battles at Wimbledon with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/roger-federer">Roger Federer</a>, and endured the setbacks of injuries that ultimately pushed him into retirement. Born in Johannesburg in 1986, Anderson picked up a tennis racket at the age of six while also competing in track and field. By the time he turned pro in 2007, his rise was rapid. Within four years, he had cracked the top 50, and by 2015, he was entrenched inside the world’s top 10.

Instead, it became a turning point. Later that season, he reached his first Grand Slam final at the U.S. Open, falling to Rafael Nadal but proving he belonged on the game’s biggest stages.

That summer cemented Anderson’s place in tennis lore, but the physical toll was immense. Soon after, his body began to break down again. Multiple knee surgeries, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, kept him from finding consistent form. By 2022, at age 35, Anderson decided it was time to walk away.



In an emotional letter announcing his retirement, he wrote: “There were so many people who helped me along the way, and believed that a kid from South Africa could fulfill his dreams”. Anderson finished his career with seven ATP titles and two Grand Slam final appearances. His last match came in Miami in 2022, a loss to Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerúndolo.



<h2>Life beyond tennis: courses, guitars, and donations</h2>



Off the court, Anderson always showed diverse interests. During his 2016 injury struggles, he launched a tennis instruction website. He also famously brought his guitar along on tour, once even strumming during a physiotherapy session.



But his most surprising off-court moment came in 2024. No longer an active player, Anderson and his wife donated a fortune to a crowdfunding campaign organized by journalist Ben Rothenberg. Eugenie Bouchard, the 2014 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/wimbledon">Wimbledon</a> finalist who was once Canada’s top-ranked player, has announced her retirement from professional tennis. The 31-year-old confirmed she will step away from the sport after one final appearance at the 2025 Canadian Open in Montreal, the city where her tennis journey began.



“You’ll know when it’s time. For me, it’s now,” Bouchard wrote in an Instagram post confirming her decision. The National Bank Open, which responded publicly to her announcement, will serve as the final stop in a career that began with soaring potential and later came to be defined by its sharp decline.



Bouchard’s rise to international stardom was rapid. After a successful junior career that included a Wimbledon girls’ singles title in 2012, she made her Grand Slam debut in 2013 and immediately caught attention with third-round runs at Wimbledon and the US Open, as well as a second-round showing at Roland Garros. At SW19, she played the best tennis of her career. She cruised through the draw without dropping a set, defeating players like Angelique Kerber and Simona Halep en route to her first Grand Slam final. There, she faced 2011 champion Petra Kvitova. Although Bouchard started strongly, Kvitova’s power and experience proved decisive. After taking the first set 6-3, the Czech dominated the second 6-0 to win her second Wimbledon crown.

Bouchard underwent shoulder surgery and sustained a concussion at the 2015 US Open after slipping in a locker room. That incident led to a legal battle with the United States Tennis Association, which was eventually resolved through a settlement.

In recent years, she tried to work her way back by entering Grand Slam qualifying tournaments, but those efforts ended in disappointment. From 2021 through 2025, Bouchard played five qualifying events at the majors and failed to reach the main draw in all of them.



For Bouchard, the story will end where it began. She will step away from tennis in front of her home crowd in Montreal, where she first emerged as a rising star. Just as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic once dominated the ATP Tour and collected most of the Grand Slam titles over the past two decades, the new landscape of men’s tennis appears to be increasingly shaped by <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/carlos-alcaraz">Carlos Alcaraz</a> and Jannik Sinner. That shift is underscored by a remarkable record the two have achieved following their recent showdowns in the finals of Roland Garros and Wimbledon.



According to Mister Only Tennis, an X account known for detailed tennis stats, Alcaraz and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jannik-sinner">Sinner</a> now rank first and third, respectively, in terms of Grand Slam final win percentage in the Open Era, which began in 1968. This ranking includes only players who have reached at least five major finals.



It is topped by Australian legend Rod Laver, who posted an 83.3% success rate by winning five of six finals—<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/wimbledon">Wimbledon</a> 1968 and all four majors in 1969—losing only at Roland Garros in 1968. Notably, Laver also captured six additional major titles during the amateur era.



Tied with Laver at the top—excluding those amateur titles—is Alcaraz. The Spanish star has also won five of his first six Grand Slam finals (US Open 2022, Wimbledon 2023 and 2024, and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/roland-garros">Roland Garros</a> 2024 and 2025), with his only loss coming at this year’s Wimbledon final.

Sinner sits just below with an 80% win rate in Grand Slam finals, having claimed titles at the Australian Open in 2024 and 2025, the US Open in 2024, and Wimbledon in 2025. His lone defeat came at Roland Garros earlier this year. In fact, Alcaraz and Sinner handed each other their first career losses in Grand Slam finals this season—evidence of the razor-thin margin between them at the top of the sport.

What makes these achievements even more impressive is the age of the two players. At just 23 and 22 years old, respectively, Sinner and Alcaraz are already cementing their place among tennis’s elite, posting statistics that compare favorably with some of the game’s all-time greats.



In addition to their Grand Slam finals efficiency, both players rank among the best in ATP Tour final win percentage since the start of the Open Era, based on players who have contested at least 25 finals.



Per Mister Only Tennis, Thomas Muster leads that list with an 81.6% mark (44–10), followed by Nikolay Davydenko at 75% (21–7). Alcaraz matches Davydenko’s percentage—though he has done so at a far younger age. Sinner follows closely with a 74.1% win rate (20–7). Others rounding out the top group include Thomas Enqvist (73.1%), Pete Sampras (72.7%), and Rod Laver (71.9%).

The former World No. 1 and two-time <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/wimbledon">Wimbledon</a> champion called out the Spaniard during his Advantage Connors podcast, arguing that a player of his caliber should never publicly reveal that kind of vulnerability.



“It’s not acceptable. I don’t know if I would’ve ever admitted something like that,” Connors said. “No matter what happens, you’ve got to go out there, mix things up, or try something different“.

Connors, who won eight Grand Slam singles titles and 125 career trophies including doubles, criticized Alcaraz’s lack of a backup plan when his game wasn’t working. “I know I say that a lot but if your game number one is not winning you have to figure something else out. I got my a— handed to me a couple of times at Wimbledon too. Everybody does,” he added.

Although Connors has often praised Alcaraz in the past, he didn’t hold back this time. “But if you are going to beat me you are going to have to beat me. I am trying to play three different games so if you are beating me at game one or game two, I am trying to do something different,” Connors continued. “You may not see it from the stands, but that is a tough thing to admit”.

Alcaraz acknowledged Sinner’s superior tactics, especially from the baseline, and admitted that he struggled to respond in key moments. “It was all about him pushing me to the limit in every point,” Alcaraz said after the match. “Mentally, it’s really tough to maintain. When you see the opponent playing such good tennis, I didn’t know what to do“.



He also pointed to the Italian’s advantage on second serves. “From the baseline, he was better than me. The big key was the second serves. He was returning really well and then attacking the second ball. It’s difficult when you’re defending all the time,” he continued.



“I just gave him a lot of free points on his second serve. He has a big first serve, but on second serves, I needed to do more. I had to be better with those points. But it was a great match—I think the level was really high,” he added.

The 23-year-old will now have a shot at redemption in a rematch of the Roland Garros final, where he had three championship points against <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/carlos-alcaraz">Alcaraz</a> but ultimately fell short as the Spaniard claimed his fifth career Grand Slam title.



When asked in his post-match press conference who he saw as the favorite for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/wimbledon">Wimbledon</a> final, Djokovic leaned slightly toward Alcaraz, citing the Spaniard’s experience and confidence.



“I think I will give a slight edge to Carlos as a favorite because of the two titles he’s won here and the way he’s playing and the confidence he has right now,” said Djokovic. “But it’s just a slight advantage because Jannik is hitting the ball extremely well. I think it’s going to be, again, a very close matchup like we had in Paris”.

<h2>Djokovic details his physical struggles</h2>



The 38-year-old admitted that he wasn’t physically at his best against Sinner. After tweaking something near the end of his quarterfinal win over Flavio Cobolli, Djokovic said he simply couldn’t move the way he needed to in order to compete at the highest level.

“I do feel disappointed that I just wasn’t able to move as well as I thought or hoped that I would. It’s just age, the wear and tear of the body. As much as I’m taking care of it, the reality hits me right now, last year and a half, like never before, to be honest,” Djokovic admitted. “It’s tough for me to accept that because I feel like when I’m fresh, when I’m fit, I can still play really good tennis. I’ve proven that this year”.



While Djokovic continues to reach the latter stages of Grand Slam tournaments—semifinals or better in all three Majors so far this year—he acknowledged that five-set matches against the sport’s rising stars are becoming increasingly difficult.



“I guess playing best-of-five, particularly this year, has been a real struggle for me physically. The longer the tournament goes, the worse the condition gets,” he continued. “I reach the final stages, I reach the semis of every Slam this year, but I have to play Sinner or Alcaraz. These guys are fit, young, sharp. I feel like I’m going into the match with tank half empty. It’s just not possible to win a match like that”.
