The patience finally ran out in Gotham. Following another subpar outing, HC Robert Saleh benched <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/zach-wilson" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Zach Wilson</a> in favor of Tim Boyle. He didn’t fare much better, but this means the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-jets" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York Jets</a> have finally given up on their former No. 2 pick.



Wilson showed glimpses of improved play while subbing in for<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/aaron-rodgers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Aaron Rodgers,</a> but he’s clearly not a starting-caliber player, at least not at this point in his development. The Jets simply cannot afford to wait for him any longer.



Needless to say, Boyle isn’t exactly <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Patrick Mahome</a>s either, but the team needed to make a change and find a spark for the remainder of the season, especially if they want to hold down the fort for Aaron Rodgers.



<h2>Boyle Wants To Play Fast</h2>



Boyle’s numbers weren’t exactly impressive, but he did give the offense a more dynamic player. His ability to get rid of the football in no time gave the offensive line a breather, and that could be key to their success going forward.

“Decisiveness is a part of my game that I lean on, just trying to get the ball out, not forcing things in coverage,” Boyle said. “There’s a part of the game where taking a sack is better than trying to jam it into coverage and throwing an interception, so I think I bring — I just get the ball out quick. It takes a lot of heat off the O-line. It gets our playmakers the ball in space. We have some guys that can make some people miss.”



<h2>Rodgers Has No Incentive To Come Back</h2>



Nonetheless, Boyle’s appointment could also mean that Rodgers won’t come back at all this season. According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, the chances of him coming back to a team with no postseason aspirations are quite slim:



“Fox’s Jay Glazer reported Sunday that Rodgers wants to return to practice in early December and was targeting a return to the field a few weeks later,” reported Rosenblatt. “Rodgers has said in the past he’d only consider this if the Jets were contending for the playoffs. Right now, it seems unlikely the Jets will have a shot at anything meaningful by the time Rodgers would theoretically be ready to return — if that were actually possible, anyway.”



More than that, the entire offense hasn’t played up to their level, which is why Rodgers might want to reconsider his plan of coming back early, as that offensive line won’t be able to protect him at all.

“And why would Rodgers want to return to this group anyway? Left tackle Mekhi Becton suffered an ankle injury Sunday and if he’s out Friday, the Jets will be deploying their eighth starting offensive line group in 11 weeks,” Rosenblatt continued. “Against the Bills, they started Chris Glaser at right guard and Carter Warren filled in for Becton. Neither had played significant NFL snaps before that. A 40-year-old Rodgers coming off surgery won’t be safe behind that group, even if he’s getting rid of the ball quickly and making adjustments at the line.”

Wilson has been fairly better in the first three quarters of the field, but he struggles mightily in the final 20 yards, and that was evident again in the loss to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/las-vegas-raiders" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Las Vegas Raiders.</a>

<h2>Saleh Blames Penalties For Loss</h2>



The Jets had more total yards (365) than their rivals and were an impressive 7 of 16 on third down. Even so, they had eight penalties for 83 yards, which is why HC Robert Saleh believes there could still be a light at the end of the tunnel if they clean their act up:



“The hard part for me is when I’m watching the game — it’s easy to look at the play-caller, the head coach, the quarterback,” Saleh said. “But we’re moving the ball. Today we moved the ball. But it’s just penalties, penalties on the O-line, penalties at tight end, penalties at running back. Just dumb, dumb stuff that we need to get cleaned up or it’s not going to change. But we can clean it up and at least give ourselves a chance to play clean football, to see what it looks like. I still believe it’ll look pretty good.”



Wilson echoed a similar sentiment after the loss, talking about how many big plays have been called back because of penalties. He also vowed to find a way to be better in that regard:



“It literally feels like every good play we have is getting called back,” Wilson added. “It’s so frustrating now. I know how important every drive is and I would hope the guys out know the call. We have to find a way to be better in those situations.”

The Jets are now 4-5 for the season. They’re still third in the AFC East Division, but a playoff berth seems more out of reach now. They need to at least stay around .500 to keep dreaming about the playoffs.

If Aaron Rodgers plans to return next month, the New York Jets will play against the Houston Texans on December 10th, the Miami Dolphins on December 17th and the Washington Commanders on December 24th.







This means that the Jets would have to play only three more games without their star. Buffalo Bills on November 19th, Miami Dolphins on November 24th and Atlanta Falcons on December 3rd.

Granted that his offensive line hasn’t given him any time or space to operate and rival teams have managed to get to him easily, but the little signs of improvement from last season haven’t been enough.



The Jets boast a stellar defense that could give them a chance to win week in and week out. But kicking field goals just isn’t enough to get the job done, especially in the most pass-happy era in NFL history.



However, as much as some analysts and fans believe that they should just go on and bench Wilson, HC Robert Saleh continues to stand by his backup QB. He claims it’s not fair or enough to put the entire blame on him and held his entire team accountable for the loss to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-chargers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Los Angeles Chargers.</a>

<h2>Robert Saleh Stands By Zach Wilson</h2>



“It would be one thing if it was just him,” Saleh told SNY. “It is the easy thing to do. He and the play-caller are the two most visible things, so when things aren’t good, it’s easy to blame them. It’s easy to blame the people who are most visible to the camera. If it was just him, that would be worth discussing, but this is a collective issue.”



Wilson completed 33 of 49 passes for 263 yards and no touchdowns against the Jets. Redzone execution wasn’t exactly the best, and he did have three fumbles (two lost). Then again, there’s only so much you can do when your offensive line allows eight sacks.



The Jets’ only points came via Greg Zuerlein, who connected from from 47 and 46 yards. Needless to say, this once again raises questions about whether the Jets could realistically pursue a postseason berth without <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/aaron-rodgers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aaron Rodgers</a>, which leads us to the next question.



<h2>Should Aaron Rodgers Come Back At All This Season?</h2>



Rodgers has been pushing to make an unprecedented in-season return after tearing his Achilles four plays into the year. That would be a major breakthrough for sports medicine, and his hard work has been inspiring for his teammates and colleagues.

But should the Jets actually take that risk? He’s 40 years old, and the sooner he could come back would be right in the middle of the playoffs. If the Jets already made the playoffs without him, why change at that point?

It makes sense, since the 4x NFL MVP got injured after only four snaps in the season opener against the Buffalo Bills. Besides, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/zach-wilson">Zach Wilson</a>‘s lackluster performances only made them miss the veteran quarterback even more.



Though Rodgers’ season seemed to be over when MRI showed he suffered a torn left Achilles, the 39-year-old has reportedly been ahead of schedule in his recovery. In fact, it looks like he could even makes his return this season. 



On Monday, Rodgers even made fans think his comeback could be just around the corner. Following the Jets’ loss to the Chargers, the ESPN microphones caught him telling Derwin James he could return in a “few weeks.”



But in his weekly appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers set the record straight. “I didn’t realize that was going to get caught there. That was said a little tongue in cheek there. It’d be nice to be able to be back in a couple weeks. That’s probably not anywhere near a realistic timeline,” Rodgers said. “I said it smiling, joking. He was talking about how he’s excited for me to get back on the field at some point, I joked it would be a few weeks. Obviously going to be more than a couple weeks.”

The former Packers star said that he feels “a lot more” strength in his Achilles though, but that he’s still “a long way off” from taking the Jets offensive reins again. This is definitely a huge blow for Jets fans, who are not pleased with how Wilson has been playing thus far. To make things worse, Robert Saleh seems to have no intention of benching the third-year quarterback yet.

<h2>Robert Saleh defends Zach Wilson</h2>



The Jets couldn’t get things going on Monday night as they suffered a 27-6 loss. Wilson has once again been criticized for the team’s shortcomings in offense, but Saleh said it’s not fair to put all the blame on the quarterback. “Was it his best game? Obviously not,” Saleh said. “Was it his worst game? No, I’m not going to say it was his worst game.”



Wilson completed 33 of 49 passes, throwing for 264 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the loss to the Chargers. However, his stats this season are not great. In seven starts, the 24-year-old has completed 59.9 percent of his passes (30th) for 1,600 yards (24th), five touchdowns (30th) and five interceptions. 



Even so, Saleh believes the Jets’ offensive woes go beyond the quarterback. “It would be one thing if it was just him. <h2>Garrett Wilson is not happy with the Jets offense</h2>



Wide receiver Garrett Wilson has also addressed the Jets’ problems in offense, but he had no intention of hiding his true feelings. “It’s inexcusable, man, and it’s getting to the point where it’s disappointing,” he said, via Rich Cimini of ESPN.



The Jets offense has only eight touchdown drives in 2023, ranking 30th in points per game and 31st in yards per game. The defense, on the other hand, has kept opponents at bay for much of the season, but sometimes it wasn’t enough.

“I hate coming off the field, looking our defense in the eyes and knowing that we have to send them back out there after three-and-out,” Wilson added. “Them boys are my dogs and they come out and ball. The Jets are 4-4 after nine weeks, so the fear of missing the playoffs for the 13th consecutive season is big. Rodgers will remain on the sidelines for a while, so it seems that the Jets’ hopes will continue to rely on Wilson.

<h2>He Still Wants To Come Back This Season</h2>



“The goal for me is to come back this year. It’s got to be, otherwise, I think it’d be a lot of rehab and pain. We’ll see what happens. I’ve got to hit some markers before that,” Rodgers told NBC. “I’ve got to be able to move around. I’ve got to be able to avoid putting myself in harm’s way.”



Still, perhaps coming back this season wouldn’t be in his or the team’s best interests. If he’s ready to play in, say, February, that means the Jets are in the playoffs, and making a QB switch at that point would be risky, to say the least. He’s still under contract for another year, so he’d get his chance to lead the team at some point.



If Zach Wilson figures things out, it would be better for Rodgers to get back to full strength and not rush his way back on the field. He’s almost 40 years old, and Achilles injuries are career-threatening and career-altering for most players. 



<h2>Rodgers Is Proud Of His Teammates</h2>



Rodgers has stayed close to his teammates and the organization throughout the whole process. He’s been a mentor and an active presence, watching from the sidelines, encouraging the players, and claiming to be quite proud of them:

Leading the team in touches with an impressive 79, Hall has contributed 539 yards from scrimmage. Adding to the potential reasons for Cook’s departure is the increased utilization of Michael Carter, who has seen more playing time than him in the past three games.

During an appearance at The Pat McAfee Show, Aaron Rodgers admitted he’s still aiming for a return in the 2023 season with the New York Jets and explained the reasons for such an optimistic forecast. 


 

 


“Obviously, we’re ahead of schedule. There are a lot of factors to that. There’s the way I’ve attacked the rehab. There’s obviously the surgery that doctor ElAttrache did. There’s the rehab I’ve done, the diet I’ve being doing as well and there’s the power of the mind.”

However, the star quarterback was cautious about a possible comeback. “There’s just markers. You saw me without crutches and throwing out on the field. Another marker is going to be jogging. Then, another marker is going to be pregame workouts and getting on the practice field. All these markers are going to take time.”



<h2>When will Aaron Rodgers return to the Jets?</h2>



Right now, there’s not a specific date for Aaron Rodgers’ comeback with the New York Jets. The only thing we know is that an Achilles injury was supposed to be season-ending, but, the quarterback wants to make an improbable recovery.



“It’s not just going to be boom, boom, boom, boom. There are critical markers that I have to hit as far as single-leg strength and being able to do heel raises and being able to do explosive movements. And these are all progressions that take time.”
