Basabe is part of the 2031 international class and, according to Wilber Sánchez, he is the youngest player in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/mlb" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MLB</a> history to secure a pre-agreement with a major leagues franchise.



Basabe has been training in the MB13 Baseball Academy. It’s worth noting that pre-agreements with international prospects are non-binding deals. Instead, they are verbal signings. This means either side can back out if push comes to shove. It’s also important to say the Phillies aren’t paying the $1.8 million right now. That is the agreed future signing bonus at 16. What this does is the Phillies gain early commitment, scouting access, and development influence.

The pre-agreement work as follows. From the age of 11 until 15, Basabe will still train in Venezuela or where he desires. Most likely, scouts will monitor his development and the Phillies provide some sort of guidance, though there is not a formal contract yet.

“Phillies manager Rob Thomson says he was proud of Nick Castellanos with his letter, being accountable for his actions with what happened that night in Miami,” John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia reported regarding the skipper’s comments following Castellanos’ Instagram post.



While Thomson praised Castellanos for owning up to his mistakes, it is also worth remembering that other <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/philadelphia-phillies">Phillies</a> players had previously expressed frustration with the now–free agent’s attitude, both inside and outside the clubhouse.

“We wish him the best moving forward,” Schwarber said. When asked whether Castellanos had been a distraction for the Phillies, his response was notably evasive. “It’s hard to say,” he told reporters.

What Gelb revealed in his article is no minor matter. According to the report, Castellanos had begun to feel isolated from the rest of the clubhouse. Veterans were no longer speaking with him, it reached a point where players were essentially pretending that everything was fine.

Castellanos could have become an expensive addition for the Yankees due to the $20 million salary still owed to him by the Phillies, money Philadelphia would have had to absorb at least partially, reportedly around $16 million, before New York would then decide what to do with him long term.

While the Yankees certainly have the financial flexibility to take on a player who hit .250 last season, he could have projected as a bench piece or pinch-hitting option if needed. However, given the depth and quality of hitters already on their roster, that type of role is not necessarily a priority in the Bronx.

That is the reality. Castellanos currently does not have representation and is acting as his own agent. That means he will personally have to take the lead in finding a new team for the 2026 season, this time without Harper.
