Losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime at <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/super-bowl">Super Bowl LVIII</a> was a huge blow for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-francisco-49ers">San Francisco 49ers</a>, but that didn’t change their thoughts on <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy">Brock Purdy</a>. Despite the defeat, the franchise is glad to move forward with him as their starting quarterback.



Speaking to reporters at the scouting combine this week, Niners general manager John Lynch made it clear the 49ers feel relieved they’ve found a reliable signal-caller in Purdy, who was the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.



“It’s a nice feeling, I know that — having stability at that position,” Lynch said, via Pro Football Talk. “People forget last year was Brock’s first full year as a starter. So I think that leaves you feeling pretty good about his opportunity with what we’ve already seen in his couple of years.“



Purdy exceeded expectations in his rookie year, proving to be up to the task when the Niners had to lean on him. With both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo out with season-ending injuries, the Iowa State product stepped up and lead the team to the NFC Championship, where a shoulder surgery forced him off the field.

He won the job for the following year and made it all the way to the big game, falling just short in Las Vegas. Either way, Lynch emphasized on the fact that Purdy is just getting started.

<h2>49ers happy to build on Purdy’s fast rise</h2>



“In particular, last year, the first full year as a starter coming off the injury, we’re past that. It just gives you a lot of confidence going in. Now, it’s like kind of building around him,” Lynch added. “It gives you a foundation to build off of and that is a really good feeling, a settling feeling.”



Purdy delivered a solid performance in the 2024 Super Bowl. Even though he couldn’t lead the Niners to victory, the second-year quarterback didn’t make costly mistakes, ending the match with zero turnovers.







The 24-year-old completed 23 of his 38 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown, but he was just unlucky to have <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a> on the other side. Only Tom Brady and Joe Burrow managed to win a playoff game against Mahomes’ Chiefs, so the Niners had nothing to complain about Purdy this time.



In fact, his ability to win the job against all odds and take the team to consecutive deep playoff runs is already enough for the Niners to feel they have the right guy at QB1. His annual salary for 2024 will continue to be less than $1m, but with another strong season, expect the young signal-caller to get a much better deal next year.

Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt could be on his way out of Arrowhead, but the curious thing is he might end up in the Bay area. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the 52-year-old is interviewing for the Niners’ defensive coordinator opening.



“The 49ers are interviewing Chiefs defensive backs coach David Merritt for their defensive coordinator position, sources say,” Garafolo wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Merritt, a longtime trusted assistant for Steve Spagnuolo, helped coach up KC’s fourth-ranked pass defense this season.”



The news made noise given how recently the Chiefs beat the 49ers in the big game, but it reflects how fast everyone in the league can move on. The new season won’t start until September, but teams are already making decisions with Week 1 of 2024 in mind.

Merritt, who’s served in Kansas City since 2019, has been a pivotal member behind the Chiefs’ defense that helped win the championship last year. However, the team could lose even more important pieces from the unit.

Apart from Merritt’s possible departure, the Chiefs have a number of impending free agents this offseason, with a list headlined by defensive tackle Chris Jones and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed.


 

 


At 29, Jones is seeking one of the biggest contracts for a defensive player after proving his worth during his time in Kansas City. As for Sneed, the team placed the franchise tag on him but also gave him permission to seek a trade, according to reports.



Keeping both of them is the priority for this offseason, but the list of Chiefs free agents in 2024 is even longer, with the likes of Drue Tranquill, Mike Edwards, and Donovan Smith also in that group.

Despite the happiness of winning the Super Bowl, Nick Bolton received bittersweet news as it was confirmed that the NFL imposed a fine of $8,238 for his horse-collar tackle on Brock Purdy in the second quarter.

Former NFL MVP Cam Newton, for instance, has recently called out the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-francisco-49ers">San Francisco 49ers</a>‘ play calling while defending quarterback <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy">Brock Purdy</a>.



“First off, let’s say this. Brock Purdy did not have a bad game,” Newton said on his ‘4th and 1’ podcast, via SB Nation. “To that point, field goal versus touchdown, that’s not Brock Purdy. Why the f— did they receive the ball first? It was Tony Romo who mentioned this — when you know what you have to get, now you have four downs to get it, not three.”



Newton was talking about the 49ers’ controversial decision to receive the ball in overtime instead of kicking it. San Francisco ended up settling for a field goal in a fourth down situation, letting the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Chiefs</a> play their possession knowing how many points they needed to win the game. “The 49ers, they were just trying to get points,” Newton said. “And that is not Brock Purdy’s fault, that’s bad coaching. There was too many people who was exposed. They didn’t know the real rules of overtime.”



Shanahan has been questioned for opting to take the ball, and it only got worse when 49ers players admitted not knowing the new overtime rules. Newton once controversially labeled Purdy as a ‘game manager’, but now says the second-year QB did nothing wrong in the big game.

“We’re not understanding how serious this is. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a> and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Kansas City Chiefs</a> survived a 25-22 thriller in Las Vegas against the San Francisco 49ers to win their second consecutive Super Bowl. Of course, one of the biggest topics is if Kyle Shanahan gave them an advantage in overtime.



The&nbsp;49ers&nbsp;won the coin toss and linebacker Fred Warner had the instruction from the bench to take the ball. That gave Andy Reid and his offense the chance to know exactly what they needed in their first possession. 



Mahomes had proven over the years that he is a clutch quarterback in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a> like Joe Montana and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/tom-brady">Tom Brady</a>, but, the 49ers thought it will be better to wait for a second series as Shanahan later explained.



“We went through all the analytics. We just thought it would be better.&nbsp;We wanted the ball third.&nbsp;If both teams matched and scored, we wanted to be the ones who had the chance to go win. Got that field goal, so knew we had to hold them to at least a field goal, and if we did, then we thought it was in our hands after that.”

On the other side, Andy Reid confirmed after the Super Bowl that the Kansas City Chiefs would have deferred if they won the coin toss. That’s why, when the 49ers took the ball, Patrick Mahomes couldn’t believe it.


 

 


According to the new&nbsp;overtime rules, each team would have at least the ball once. So, the quarterback knew this was a massive advantage. He wasn’t thinking in giving another chance to San Francisco.

The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/super-bowl">2024 Super Bowl</a> continues to give a lot to talk about even days after the game, with many people blaming <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kyle-shanahan">Kyle Shanahan</a> for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-francisco-49ers">San Francisco 49ers</a>‘ loss. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Kansas City Chiefs</a> tight end <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/travis-kelce">Travis Kelce</a> recently addressed the coin flip situation in overtime, suggesting the Niners made the wrong choice.



“You win the coin toss, that’s what you get,” Kelce said on his ‘New Heights’ podcast, via NBC Sports. “You get the opportunity to have the advantage and they handed it right over to us. Not trying to harp on the guy, but it was a huge … .”



With the scored tied after four quarters, Shanahan opted to receive the ball rather than kick it to start the overtime period. But San Francisco only got to score a field goal, letting the Chiefs win the game with a touchdown. 



Shanahan explained he was thinking about a potential sudden death situation, as the Niners would have gotten the ball back if things were still level after the Chiefs’ possession. But <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/andy-reid">Andy Reid</a>‘s team had no intention to let that happen.

<h2>Chiefs were happy to take the ball second</h2>



While Shanahan’s call makes sense, it looks like Kansas City always wanted the 49ers to receive first. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a> looked happy as soon as he heard San Francisco’s decision, with the quarterback later revealing the Chiefs’ idea was to win the game before the Niners could get the ball back.

Even if <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy">Brock Purdy</a>‘s offense managed to get seven points, Mahomes and company would have gone for a TD plus a two-point attempt to try and seal the deal at Allegiant Stadium. Either way, Kelce made it clear they had enough confidence on their defense to hold the Niners to a field goal.







“They said we wanted to receive and the ref looked at Fred [Warner] and said ‘Are you sure?’ And he said ‘Yes, I want to receive. I want the ball.’ I jumped out of my seat and said ‘Here we go, let’s go boys. They want to receive? We get second possession and know exactly what they want. Defense, hold them. Hold them to three (points). We’re going to go down here and win this thing, baby.&apos;”

The toss may be seen as a turning point in the 2024 Super Bowl, but in the end, the 49ers lost because they simply didn’t do what they needed to do. Their offense couldn’t score more than three points, while their defense was unable to stop Mahomes on a 72-yard drive that led to the game-winning touchdown.

Of course, the decision has sparked a massive controversy in the&nbsp;<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFL</a> because Mahomes is the greatest quarterback in clutch moments since <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/tom-brady">Tom Brady</a>. This was the first take by the 49ers head coach.

<h2>Kyle Shanahan explains why 49ers players didn’t know Super Bowl overtime rules</h2>



Now, the situation just took another level when many 49ers players such as Kyle Juszczyk admitted that they didn’t know the overtime rules before the coin toss in the Super Bowl. 


 

 


Meanwhile, Andy Reid pointed out that the Kansas City Chiefs had many meetings in the two weeks prior to the game and they were convinced deferring was the best option.

However, San Francisco made that choice for them and this was Shanahan’s take on what happened with his players. “We told everyone as we were waiting for the coin toss to review everyone to make sure they were sure before we go out. So, we asked position coaches to do that. But I didn’t cover it in a meeting on the Super Bowl week. I don’t think that changes anything.”

While <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/andy-reid">Andy Reid</a>‘s Kansas City Chiefs are getting nothing but praise, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kyle-shanahan">Kyle Shanahan</a> is facing the consequences of losing yet another <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/super-bowl">Super Bowl</a> at the helm of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-francisco-49ers">San Francisco 49ers</a>.



Many of 44-year-old’s decisions on Sunday are being questioned now that the Niners lost, especially his call to receive the ball first in overtime. Reid, however, defended his colleague’s choice, explaining there haven’t been enough Super Bowls with the new overtime rules to judge Shanahan’s call. 



“That’s the value of [statistical analysis coordinator] Mike Frazier. He does a great job with that. There’s two way you can go with it. You can either kick it off or you can receive it. I’m not sure there’s a right answer necessarily,” Reid said, via Pro Football Talk.



This was the first Super Bowl that went to overtime with the revised rules that guarantees both teams will have a chance of possession. After winning the toss, Shanahan ordered the Niners to receive the ball. It didn’t go to plan, as they had to settle with a field goal before <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a> led an incredible drive to find Mecole Hardman for the game-winning touchdown.

“Ours ended up being the right one. That easily could have gone the other way,” Reid explained. “That’s what we felt was the right thing to do. I’m never going to question Kyle because he’s brilliant. That was just something that we chose through out studies. We felt that was important.”

Speaking to reporters after the game, Shanahan explained to the media he wanted to anticipate to a potential sudden death scenario. With the 49ers receiving first, they would also get back the ball in the event the score was still tied after the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Chiefs</a>‘ possession.

Shanahan has a fair point. The problem was that San Francisco failed to get the job done both in offense and defense. The Chiefs were happy to kick the ball first, as Mahomes later revealed their idea was to look for a touchdown followed by a two-point attempt before letting the Niners get the ball back. But it wasn’t necessary, as the Chiefs only needed to get into the end zone to get the upper hand.
